Abstract

The biblical studies classroom can be a site of personal and social transformation. To make it a space for positive change, the contributors to this volume question and reevaluate traditional teaching practices and assessment tools that foreground white, Western scholarship in order to offer practical guidance for an antiracist pedagogy. The introduction and fifteen essays provide tools for engaging issues of social context and scriptural authority, nationalism and religious identities, critical race theory, and how race, gender, and class can be addressed empathetically. Contributors Sonja Anderson, Randall C. Bailey, Eric D. Barreto, Denise Kimber Buell, Greg Carey, Haley Gabrielle, Wilda C. Gafney, Julián Andrés González Holguín, Sharon Jacob, Tat-siong Benny Liew, Francisco Lozada Jr., Shelly Matthews, Roger S. Nam, Wongi Park, Jean-Pierre Ruiz, Abraham Smith, and Kay Higuera Smith share their experience creating classrooms that are spaces that enable the production of new knowledge without reproducing a white subject of the geopolitical West.

Abstract

"The biblical studies classroom can be a site of personal and social transformation for students and teachers alike. To make it a place for positive change, the contributors to Race and Biblical Studies question and reevaluate traditional teaching practices and assessment tools in order to offer practical guidance for an antiracist pedagogy. The introduction and fifteen essays not only critique previous practices that have reinforced whiteness as the norm in many ways, both wittingly or unwittingly, but also provide tools for engaging issues of social context and scriptural authority, nationalism and religious identities, critical race theory, and how race, gender, and class can be addressed empathetically"--

Abstract

"This commentary on Luke provides a feminist interpretation of Scripture in serious, scholarly engagement with the whole text, not only those texts that explicitly mention women. It addresses not only issues of gender but also those of power, authority, ethnicity, racism, and classism"--

Abstract

While recent decades have seen a plethora of studies exploring the complex processes that shaped biblical books traditionally designated as Prophets, much remains to be done in order to uncover the rich history of their interpretation throughout the ages. This collection of essays aims at filling this gap by exploring different aspects of the exegesis of the Former and Latter Prophets in contexts both ancient and modern, Jewish and Christian. From the inner-biblical interpretation of the Prophets to the Dead Sea Scrolls, Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha, the New Testament, Patristic writings, and contemporary rhetoric, this volume sheds light on how key figures in those books were read and understood by both ancient and not so-ancient readers.

Abstract

There is growing interest in understanding the phenomenon of prayer and praying in the Hebrew Bible, Early Judaism, and nascent Christianity. This book brings together papers by leading scholars in these fields to revisit long-standing questions and chart new paths of inquiry into the nature, form, and practice of prayer in the ancient world. The essays in this volume deal with particular texts of and about prayer, practices of prayer, and figures and locations (both historical and literary) that are associated with prayer and praying. These studies draw on a range of methods and theoretical approaches, including form and text criticism, literary and narrative analysis, and anthropological and sociological analysis, or they apply particular theories of discourse, ethics, and moral agency to these ancient texts. Together, they offer fresh interpretations of addressing the divine in the literature of Early Judaism and Christianity --Back Cover.
