Abstract

This thesis conducts a socio-spatial analysis of the architectural and spatial transformations within the Cinquantenaire Park in Brussels. Once a prominent symbol of Belgian identity, the park now finds itself on the periphery of the European quarter. In 2023, coinciding with Belgium's bicentennial and the celebration of Brussels as the capital of the European Union, a masterplan was unveiled outlining park renovations aligned with the principles of the New European Bauhaus—an initiative by the European Commission aimed at creating places that are "Beautiful, Inclusive, and Together." This thesis engages in a cultural analysis of these changes and the park's original purpose, adopting a lens that traverses Modernity and Postmodernity. It scrutinizes the socio-cultural and economic drivers behind the renovations, examining their influence on the park's evolution and their alignment with Postmodern values within a broader context.
