Culture survives today by means of a constant recycling, optimistically trying to overcome its own decadence in the 21st century. Recycling Culture(s) addresses from a variety of perspectives this strategy, analyzing not only a wide range of texts but also of cultural practices. As the volume shows, culture thrives on a permanent state of flux, borrowing materials for its own survival wherever they are found and always favouring hybridity. This refers not only to how texts cross genre and med...

How are men represented on the printed page, the stage and the screen? What do these representations say about masculinity in the past, the present, and the future? The twelve essays in this volume explore the different ways in which men and masculinity have been represented, from the plays of William Shakespeare to the science fiction of Richard K. Morgan, passing through classic fiction by Emily Brontë and Charles Dickens, and popular favourites by Terry Pratchett and Isaac Asimov, without forgetting the Star Wars saga.

“A most timely contribution to Masculinity Studies. While most studies focus on notions of toxic masculinity, this collection adopts a refreshing approach to the subject by questioning hegemonic masculinity and by offering distinct possibilities of being a man in contemporary society. A must-read for anyone interested in changing masculinities and gender relations.” —Josep M. Armengol, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Spain “Is masculinity still in crisis? In this colourful, erudite anthology many of the most eminent masculinity scholars use their richly diverse literary knowledge to answer this question. Their goal is to find ways of finally ridding society of continuing expressions of toxic masculinities. A necessary tonic for our times.” —Lynne Segal, University of London, UK This edited volume rethinks Masculinity Studies by breaking away from the notion of the perpetual crisis of masculinity. It argues that not enough has been done to distinguish patriarchy from masculinity and proposes to detox masculinity by offering a collection of positive representations of men in fictional and non-fictional texts. The editors show how ideas of hegemonic and toxic masculinity have been too fixed on the exploration of dominance and subservience, and too little on the men (and the male characters in fiction) who behave following other ethical, personal and socially accepted patterns. Bringing together research from different periods and genres, this collection provides broad, multidisciplinary insights into alternative representations of masculinity. Sara Martín is Senior Lecturer in English Literature and Cultural Studies at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. Among her books are Masculinity and Patriarchal Villainy in British Fiction: From Hitler to Voldemort (2019) and Representations of Masculinity in Literature and Film: Focus on Men (2020). M. Isabel Santaulària is Senior Lecturer at the Department of English and Linguistics, Universitat de Lleida, Spain. Studying the relationship between sustainability and financial performance is of interest given the current economic, political and regulatory environment particularly in the European context. Indeed, Europe is recognized as a leader in terms of sustainability worldwide where sustainable responsible investing has come a long way and is increasingly gaining popularity among various actors (from business to regulatory agents). However, according to previous literature in the field, no clear relationship between corporate sustainability (CS) and corporate financial performance (CFP) has yet been established. This study uses ESG factors (short for environmental, social and governance) as a means of evaluating corporate sustainability (CS) and applies the Fama-French Three Factor model in order to compare the abnormal returns and Sharpe Ratio values obtained for four distinct portfolios built upon firms’ average ESG score. Our sample of firms issued from the STOXX EUROPE 600 was then classified into four main portfolios : LESG, MESG, HESG and HML ESG. The results show that LESG portfolios tend to outperform HESG portfolios in terms of higher abnormal returns and lower risk. Therefore, we observe that investors will tend to prefer portfolios of low ESG scoring firms to portfolios with high ESG scoring firms.
