Abstract

In previous studies of South Asian Tantric ritual, scholars tend to focus on one region or context. For the first time, Tantra, Ritual Performance and Politics in Nepal and Kerala: Embodying the Goddess-clan offers a comparative approach to Tantric mediumship as observed in two locales: Navadurgā rituals in Bhaktapur, Nepal, and Teyyāṭṭam in North Kerala. In this book, Matthew Martin advances a new theory of ritual, which spotlights the way dancer-mediums embody medieval goddess-clans and ancestor deities, through offerings of food and sacrifice, that synchronize their denizens with the land in spiralling web-like ritual networks. Uniquely interdisciplinary in style, this study synthesizes cultural history, ethnography, and theory to explore the continuities - historical, societal, and political - that characterize these ritual traditions across the subcontinent.

Abstract

Front Line Surgery is designed to provide practical insights for surgeons whose areas of practice demand quick best-outcome based solutions to complex and urgent clinical problems. Both editors are active duty officers and surgeons with multiple tours in Iraq. Each chapter provides detailed instructions and combat/emergency surgical principles with multiple detailed illustrations. While the focus is clearly clinical, the authors also provide clinical pearls in both traditional and non-traditional narrative. Top Ten Combat Trauma Lessons 1. Patients die in the ER, and 2. Patients die in the CT scanner; 3. Therefore, a hypotensive trauma patient belongs in the operating room ASAP. 4. Most blown up or shot patients need blood products, not crystalloid. Avoid trying “hypotensive resuscitation” – it’s for civilian trauma. 5. For mangled extremities and amputations, one code red (4 PRBC + 2 FFP) per extremity, started as soon as they arrive. 6. Patients in extremis will code during rapid sequence intubation, be prepared, and intubate these patients in the OR (not in the ER) whenever possible. 7. This hospital can go from empty to full in a matter of hours; don’t be lulled by the slow periods. 8. The name of the game here is not continuity of care, it is throughput. If the ICU or wards are full, you are mission incapable. 9. MASCALs live or die by proper triage and prioritization – starting at the door and including which x-rays to get, labs, and disposition. 10. No Personal Projects!!! They clog the system, waste resources, and anger others. See #8 above. Reprinted from "The Volume of Experience (January 2008 edition)", a document written and continuously updated by U.S. Army trauma surgeons working at the Ibn Sina Hospital, Baghdad, Iraq.

Abstract

The second edition of Front Line Surgery expands upon the success of the first edition, providing updated discussion of practical management of commonly encountered combat injuries. This edition reflects the cutting edge of combat casualty care, refined principles of surgical management of specific injury patterns, and incorporation of the spectrum of recent research advancements in trauma care. Each chapter continues to follow the same organization as the first edition. The “BLUF”, or bottom line up front, headlines each topic, providing the critical pearls for the reader, followed by a focused and straight forward discussion of management, pitfalls, and recommendations. In addition, select chapters conclude with a section discussing the application of this topic in civilian practice, as potentially encountered by the rural or humanitarian relief surgeon. Additional new topics include: REBOA and endovascular techniques for hemorrhage control, updates in transfusion and resuscitation practice, active shooter situations, rural trauma management in developed nations, advancements in prehospital care and the Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3) course, and discussion of the newest generations of topical hemostatic agents and tourniquets. These additions serve to both enhance the breadth and depth of the material relevant to military surgeons, but should also further expand the applicability and interest in this work to all civilian trauma surgeons.
