Abstract

Alexis de Tocqueville’s work touched upon an exceptionally broad range of social scientific disciplines, from economics to religion, and from education to international affairs. His work consistently appeals to scholars dismayed by existing disciplinary silos. Tocqueville is also well-regarded for diagnosing both the promise and perils of democratic life. Consideration of his ideas provokes serious consideration of and engagement with contemporary trends as citizens in democratic countries cope with challenges posed by new technological, cultural, and political changes. However, attention to Tocqueville is uneven across disciplines, with political theorists paying him the most heed and economists the least. This volume focuses on political economy, trying to bridge this divide. This book collects essays by emerging scholars from a variety of disciplines—political science, economics, sociology, philosophy, and social thought—to examine Tocqueville’s thoughts on political and social economy and its contemporary relevance. The book is divided into two halves. The first half engages with the main currents of research on Tocqueville’s own thoughts regarding economic institutions, constitutionalism, liberalism, history, and education. The second half applies Tocqueville’s insights to diverse contemporary topics including international relations, citizenship, mass incarceration, and pedagogy. This volume will be of interest to scholars and students interested in Tocqueville, the history of political thought, and a variety of current policy issues.

Abstract

Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, as an interdisciplinary endeavour, has surged in popularity in recent years. Work in this field usually draws on standard microeconomics to grapple with questions from political philosophy. But what might Austrian economics, which provides an alternative approach, have to offer to this endeavour?

Abstract

The modern school of Austrian economics took shape in the 1970s, and reflects the social science questions of its time. Is it still relevant today, considering that the theories that drive contemporary social science have evolved dramatically over the past few decades? While Austrian concerns such as property rights and imperfect cognition have become more common, other aspects of the Austrian thought are even more idiosyncratic than ever.In the ten chapters included here, leading economists explore whether Austrian economics still has unique insights to offer the world of today. Starting with Peter Boettke's lead essay, “What is Wrong with Austrian Economics?”, chapters include an array of perspectives responding to this question, ranging from economics, to intellectual history, to political science, and to philosophy. At the end of the volume, Boettke offers a rejoinder, asking, “What is Right About Austrian Economics?”Together, these essays explore the barriers to the spread of Austrian ideas, ask which disciplines might be receptive to them, examine the role of ideology and funding in helping and hindering the school, and consider the advantages and disadvantages of different strategies for expanding engagement with other scholars.

Abstract

This memoir is dedicated to the Antarctic mantle. It is a cross-disciplinary reference work combining geochemistry and geophysics tocharacterize Antarctic mantle properties. Through observations and modelling the mantle structures, compositions and dynamics are character-ized at regional and continental scales by subject experts. The text reviews all known occurences of sub-continental mantle xenoliths in igneous rocks. These studies are presented by region assouthern or northern Victoria Land, Marie Byrd Land, the Antarctic Peninsula, East Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic Islands.
