Abstract

How might we grasp the scope and variety of contemporary surveillance, its possibilities and threats? How have scholars addressed the topic? How has surveillance been understood in the past, and what can this awareness tell scholars and the public about the shape of things to come? Monitoring the Future addresses these questions by critically considering the utopian and dystopian literature and film that for decades has supplied provocative and illuminating depictions of surveillance, and responses to it. It goes beyond Orwell and Snowden to speculate on the shape of surveillance to come. Key Features:The first sustained account of the representation of surveillance in eutopian and dystopian literature and film * Charts surveillance's historical development and creative responses to that development * Provides a detailed critical account of the ways that surveillance studies has utilised utopias to formulate its ideas * Offers new readings of literary texts and films from More's Utopia through George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four to Margaret Atwood' Oryx and Crake; and films from Fritz Lang's Metropolis to Neil Blomkamp's Elysium and beyond.

Abstract

George Orwell argued that one of the four great motives for a prose writer was the desire 'to push the world in a certain direction, to alter other people's idea of the kind of society that they should strive after'. This book contains exciting new work by established and emerging scholars that explores political literature over the last century and a half. It shows how, from The Communist Manifesto to the dystopian future of Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake, writers have attempted to alter p...

Abstract

George Orwell is acclaimed as one of English literature's great essayists. Yet, while many are considered classics, as a body of work his essays have been neglected. Peter Marks provides the first sustained study of Orwell the essayist, giving these compelling pieces the critical attention they merit. Orwell employed the essay as a tool to entertain, illuminate and provoke readers across an array of topics. Marks situates the essays in their original contexts, exploring how journals influenced the type of essay Orwell wrote. Acknowledging this periodical culture helps explain the tactics Orwell employed, the topics he chose and the audiences he addressed. Orwell's first and last published works were essays, providing evidence of the development of his cultural and political views over two decades. Essays helped him fashion his distinctive literary 'voice' and Mark traces how their afterlife contributes to Orwell's posthumous reputation. Arguing the essays are central to Orwell's enduring literary, political and cultural value, Marks shows how we understand the complexities, subtleties, and contradictions of Orwell better when we understand his essays.
