Abstract

Nanodust and nanometer-sized structures are important components of many objects in space. Nanodust is observed in evolved stars, young stellar objects, protoplanetary disks, and dust debris disks. Within the solar system, nanodust is observed with in-situ experiments from spacecraft. Nanometer-sized substructures are found in the collected cometary and interplanetary dust particles and in meteorites. Understanding the growth and destruction of dust, its internal evolution, as well as the optical properties and the detection of nanoparticles is of fundamental importance for astrophysical research. This book provides a focused description of the current state of research and experimental results concerning nanodust in the solar system. It addresses three major questions: What is nanodust? How was it discovered in the solar system? And how do we interpret the observations? The book serves as a self-contained reference work for space researchers and provides solid information on nanodust in cosmic environments for researchers working in astrophysics or in other fields of physics.

Abstract

The small bodies in planetary systems are indicative of the material evolution, the dynamical evolution and the presence of planets in a system. Recent astronomical research, space research, laboratory research and numerical simulations have brought a wealth of new and exciting findings on extra-solar planetary systems and on asteroids, comets, meteoroids and trans-Neptunian objects in our solar system. Progress in astronomical instrumentation has led to the discovery and investigation of small bodies in the outer solar system and to observations of debris disks related to the small bodies in extra-solar planetary systems. Space research allowed for close studies of some of the small solar system bodies from spacecraft. This class-tested lecture set is intended as an introduction to the latest research results and to the key issues of future research.

Abstract

Represents a blend of research and reviews in meteor science. This book provides a view of meteoroid research including the dynamics, sources and distribution of these bodies, and their chemistry and physical processes in the interplanetary medium and the Earth's atmosphere. It is intended for researchers and students.

Abstract

Persistent meteor trains appear as a luminescent cloud that is visible im- diately following the occurrence of very bright ?reballs of magnitude )4or brighter. Opportunities for observing persistent meteor trains are limited by the rarity of ?reballs of su?ciently intense brightness. Even if a persistent train occurs in the clear night sky, the faint luminescence of the train is usually only visible for a few tens of seconds because of the rapid rate of di?usion in the upper atmosphere. Leonid meteor storms occur at 33-year intervals related to the perihelion return of the mother comet Tempel-Tuttle. Experimental studies have demonstrated that the occurrence of bright ?- balls within the Leonid meteor storm is greater than within other meteor showers. The rapid incident velocity of Leonids (71 km/s) makes the Leonid storm period an ideal time to observe persistent meteor trains. Recent - vances in the prediction of the occurrence of meteor showers (e.g. McNaught and Asher, 1999; Lyytinen and Van Flandern, 2000) enabled the METRO campaign to observe meteor showers at precisely predicted times and dates.
