Dimitris Manikas was born in 1938 on the island of Syros, in the Cyclades. He studied architecture at the Technischen Universitat Wien, graduating in 1967. He worked as a freelance architect based in Vienna, frequently collaborating with architects both in Greece and internationally. Throughout his career he participated in architectural competitions in Greece, a mark of his attachment and constant bond with his birthplace: competitions included those for the cropolis Museum, for Syntagma Square, and Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki. To mark his 80th birthday, Manakis gifted his complete archive to the Modern Greek Architecture collection of the Benaki Museum in Athens.
