Ibn Khaldûn, the fourteenth-century Arab historian, founded a special science to deal with the problems of history and culture, based on the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle and their Muslim followers. During his lifetime he held high office as government official, judge and teacher. He wrote a Universal History, the introduction to which presents a scientific approach to history and a new science of culture. Dr. Mahdi has written the first study of Ibn Khaldûn which is not an apology either for the modern social sciences or for the "modern" character of Ibn Khaldûn's thought, but a thorough analysis and interpretation of his text.
