Abstract

In Co-Design for System Acceleration, we are concerned with studying the co-design methodology, in general, and how to determine the more suitable interface mechanism in a co-design system, in particular. This will be based on the characteristics of the application and those of the target architecture of the system. We provide guidelines to support the designer's choice of the interface mechanism. The content of Co-Design for System Acceleration is divided into eight chapters. We present co-design as a methodology for the integrated design of systems implemented using both hardware and software components. This includes high-level synthesis and the new technologies available for its implementation. The physical co-design system is then presented. The development route adopted is discussed and the target architecture described. The relation between the execution times and the interface mechanisms is analyzed. In order to investigate the performance of the co-design system for different characteristics of the application and of the architecture, we developed a VHDL model of our co-design system. The timing characteristics of the system are introduced, that is times for parameter passing and bus arbitration for each interface mechanism, together with their handshake completion times. The relation between the coprocessor memory accesses and the interface mechanisms is then studied. Several memory configurations are presented and studied: single-port memory, dual-port memory and cache memory. We also introduce some new trends in co-design and system acceleration.

Abstract

This volume offers a wide spectrum of sample works developed in leading research throughout the world about innovative methodologies of swarm intelligence and foundations of engineering swarm intelligent systems as well as applications and interesting experiences using the particle swarm optimisation. Swarm intelligence is an innovative computational way to solve hard problems which is at the heart of computational intelligence. In particular, particle swarm optimization, also commonly known as PSO, mimics the behavior of a swarm of insects or a school of fish. If one of the particle discovers a good path to food the rest of the swarm will be able to follow instantly even if they are far away in the swarm. Swarm behavior is modeled by particles in multidimensional space that have two characteristics: a position and a velocity. These particles wander around the hyperspace and remember the best position that they have discovered. They communicate good positions to each other and adjust their own position and velocity based on these good positions. Instead of designing complex and centralized systems, nowadays designers rather prefer to work with many small and autonomous agents. Each agent may prescribe to a global strategy. An agent acts on the simplest of rules. The many agents co-operating within the system can solve very complex problems with a minimal design effort. In General, multi-agent systems that use some swarm intelligence are said to be swarm intelligent systems. They are mostly used as search engines and optimization tools. The book should be useful both for beginners and experienced researchers in the field of computational intelligence.

Abstract

The global economic infrastructure is becoming increasingly dependent upon information technology, with computer and communication technology being essential and vital components of Government facilities, power plant systems, medical infrastructures, financial centers and military installations to name a few. Finding effective ways to protect information systems, networks and sensitive data within the critical information infrastructure is challenging even with the most advanced technology and trained professionals. This volume provides the academic and industrial community with a medium for presenting original research and applications related to information assurance and security using computational intelligence techniques. The included chapters communicate current research on information assurance and security regarding both the theoretical and methodological aspects, as well as various applications in solving real world information security problems using computational intelligence.

Abstract

"This book presents the architecture of a quantum coprocessor that can be implemented on hardware and embedded into our personal computers to accelerate the resolution of hard complex problems. As far as the authors are concerned, this work is a pioneer as it is the first and only one that attempts a hardware implementation of a quantum coprocessor that executes quantum operation as a user directives inserted within a traditional program"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

"Parallel Evolutionary Computation" focuses on the aspects related to the parallelization of evolutionary computations, such as parallel genetic operators, parallel fitness evaluation, distributed genetic algorithms, and parallel hardware implementations, as well as on their impact on several applications. The book is divided into four parts. The first part deals with a clear software-like and algorithmic vision on parallel evolutionary optimizations. The second part is about hardware implementations of genetic algorithms, a valuable topic which is hard to find in the present literature. The third part treats the problem of distributed evolutionary computation and presents three interesting applications wherein parallel EC new ideas are featured. Finally, the last part deals with the up-to-date field of parallel particle swarm optimization to illustrate the intrinsic similarities and potential extensions to techniques in this domain. The book offers a wide spectrum of sample works developed in leading research throughout the world about parallel implementations of efficient techniques at the heart of computational intelligence. It will be useful both for beginners and experienced researchers in the field of computational intelligence.

Abstract

Designing complex programs such as operating systems, compilers, filing systems, data base systems, etc. is an old ever lasting research area. Genetic programming is a relatively new promising and growing research area. Among other uses, it provides efficient tools to deal with hard problems by evolving creative and competitive solutions. Systems Programming is generally strewn with such hard problems. This book is devoted to reporting innovative and significant progress about the contribution of genetic programming in systems programming. The contributions of this book clearly demonstrate that genetic programming is very effective in solving hard and yet-open problems in systems programming. Followed by an introductory chapter, in the remaining contributed chapters, the reader can easily learn about systems where genetic programming can be applied successfully. These include but are not limited to, information security systems, compilers, data mining systems, stock market prediction systems, robots and automatic programming.

Abstract

The design and control of autonomous intelligent mobile robotic systems operating in unstructured changing environments includes many objective difficulties. There are several studies about the ways in which, robots exhibiting some degree of autonomy, adapt themselves to fit in their environments. The application and use of bio-inspired and intelligent techniques such as reinforcement learning, artificial neural networks, evolutionary computation and so forth in the design and improvement of robot designs is an emergent research topic. Researchers have obtained robots that display an amazing slew of behaviours and perform a multitude of tasks. These include perception of environment, planning and navigation in rough terrain, pushing boxes, negotiating an obstacle course, etc. In this context, mobile robots designed using evolutionary computation approaches, usually known as Mobile Evolutionary Robotics, have experienced significant development in the last decade. The fundamental goal of mobile evolutionary robotics is to apply evolutionary computation methods to automate the production of complex behavioural robotic controllers. This volume offers a wide spectrum of sample works developed in leading research throughout the world about evolutionary mobile robotics and demonstrates the success of the technique in evolving efficient and capable mobile robots.

Abstract

Data mining consists of attempting to discover novel and useful knowledge from data, trying to find patterns among datasets that can help in intelligent decision making. However, reports of real-world case studies are not generally detailed in the literature, due to the fact that they are usually based on proprietary datasets, making it impossible to publish the results. This kind of situation makes hard to evaluate, in a precise way, the degree of effectiveness of data mining techniques in real-world applications. On the other hand, researchers of this field of expertise usually exploit public-domain datasets. This volume offers a wide spectrum of research work developed for data mining for real-world application. In the following, we give a brief introduction of the chapters that are included in this book.
