Abstract

This text describes and analyses the major transformations of southern politics of the past half century that have had a profound impact on national politics and government. Beginning with the tumultuous events of 1968 and Richard Nixon's 'southern strategy', the authors show how, over the next half century, the South has been transformed by massive changes in demographics, race, partisanship, and by growing religious conservative activism, culminating in both rising progressive Democratic Party gains in some southern states and also the unlikely election of Donald J. Trump as president with near solid southern support.

Abstract

African American candidates for state and federal office in the United States face unique challenges, given the nations complicated racial dynamics. While Black candidates running statewide have been elected in increasing numbers in many areas of the country, there have been fewer successes in the US South. This book examines the campaigns of Black statewide candidates in the South to untangle the factors that led to their electoral successes as well as the factors that continue to stymie positive electoral results. Looking at broader regional demographic and political trends, the authors project that the South is on the threshold of a major breakthrough for African American statewide candidates, who will have a substantial role in not only fundamentally changing the political dynamics of the region, but the nation as well.

Abstract

The phenomenal growth of minority populations in the South, particuarly Latinos and Asians, is quickly transforming the region's politics. As most political observers see a future rising Democratic Party in the region with Asian and Latino voters joining African Americans in supporting Democratic candidates, the analyses presented in this volume demonstrate little such certainty about the future competitiveness of the two major parties in the South.
