Server farms are to the digital world what castles used to be: the seat of power. If data is the greatest collective treasure of a digital society, basic material for business and politics: Why are the places where it is stored still so invisible? Together with students from the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, Niklas Maak shows what the future of the most important new building typology of the twenty-first century might look like—and what new collective places a city needs in the age of digitalization.

The mastermind behind what he termed beautiful and functional “machines for living,” Le Corbusier has long been recognized as one of the foremost figures in the international style of architecture. Yet, beginning in the 1940s, the famed architect and urbanist increasingly took modernism in a new direction that has until now been insufficiently considered—and little understood. Dispensing with his trademark suit and bowtie, Le Corbusier was spending increasing amounts of time at the shore in the 1940s, collecting stones, shells, and other jetsam, and enjoying the works of the philosopher and ardent shell collector Paul Valéry. And it was here that the seemingly hyper-rational architect developed a revolutionary new theory of design, built around these polished and splintered shapes. Stating that nature was the source of his inspiration, Le Corbusier embarked on a meandering odyssey through the literature and esoteric writings of his day, going on to produce such unorthodox projects as Chandigarh’s Palace of Assembly and the strange and beautiful Ronchamp Chapel in Paris, whose roof is said to have been modeled after an inverted crab’s shell. The development of Le Corbusier’s new approach not only changed modernism but also inspired—and continues to inspire—new shapes and lines in the work of a host of architects. In this superbly written and accessible piece of architectural history, Maak develops the intricate story of a breakthrough in architecture that began on a beach.

Duplex Architects, founded in 2007 in Zurich and with offices also in Düsseldorf, Hamburg, and, most recently, also in Paris, have gained an excellent reputation internationally for their designs of various scales and vast range of typologies. This first monograph on Duplex Architects’ work in Germany and Switzerland offers a close look at their approach to housing design. Five projects in Switzerland are documented extensively through a wealth of images, plans, and visualizations and exemplify the firm’s position on urban planning, typology research, and materiality and demonstrate their utterly independent way of working. Urban scale, search for new forms of communal living, the importance of community and a collaborative design process are at the core of Duplex Architects’ considerations in residential architecture. Nele Dechmann’s text and Ludovic Balland’s photo essay both illuminate Duplex Architects’ work each in its own way. Further texts are contributed by the firm’s founding partners Anne Kaestle and Dan Schürch, as well as by other expert authors, who cast their own personal glance at the five projects featured in this book. With contributions by Hubertus Adam, Marc Angélil, Nele Dechmann, Anne Kaestle, Andreas Ruby, Caspar Schärer, Dan Schürch, Philip Ursprung, Niklas Maak and Günther Vogt. Photographs by Mathilde Agius, Ludovic Balland, Lars-Ole Bastar, Roxana Rios, Alexander Rosenkranz and Mihai Sovaiala.

Deichman Bjørvika, Olso’s new public library, was completed and opened in summer 2020 after a lengthy period of planning and construction. Located opposite the city’s Opera House and the Munch Museum, this imposing building fits into the ensemble in the new cultural quarter of the Norwegian capital. The project, designed by Lundhagem and Atelier Oslo Architects following an international architectural competition, was conceived around a radical paradigm of the library as a place for conviviality and substantial multimedia platforms in a conducive, unobtrusive environment. The publication documents in detail the planning and building process, from the first draft to the opening. Essays by the novelist Elif Shafak and the library’s long-term director Liv Sæteren explain the significance of the institution as an integrative social force, while Niklas Maak pays tribute to the building from the perspective of architectural criticism. Iwan Baan and Hélène Binet capture the architecture and its atmosphere in exquisite photographs.
