Abstract

The ASLAN labex - Advanced studies on language complexity - brings together a unique set of expertise and varied points of view on language. In this volume, we employ three main sections showcasing diverse empirical work to illustrate how language within human interaction is a complex and adaptive system. The first section - epistemological views on complexity - pleads for epistemological plurality, an end to dichotomies, and proposes different ways to connect and translate between frameworks. The second section - complexity, pragmatics and discourse - focuses on discourse practices at different levels of description. Other semiotic systems, in addition to language are mobilized, but also interlocutors' perception, memory and understanding of culture. The third section - complexity, interaction, and multimodality - employs different disciplinary frameworks to weave between micro, meso, and macro levels of analyses. Our specific contributions include adding elements to and extending the field of application of the models proposed by others through new examples of emergence, interplay of heterogeneous elements, intrinsic diversity, feedback, novelty, self-organization, adaptation, multi-dimensionality, indeterminism, and collective control with distributed emergence. Finally, we argue for a change in vantage point regarding the search for linguistic universals.

Abstract

This book reports on the proceedings at the STELLAR Alpine Rendez-Vous 2013, presenting strategies in handling challenges that arise when using technology-enhanced learning (TEL). With insightful contributions from leading teachers, practitioners, researchers and policy makers, this volume will inspire everyone interested in TEL in their future projects. This book continues the influential work of the STELLAR network which was funded by the European Commission to structure the research area of technology-enhanced learning and continues to the work on the previously developed research vision. It has potential to become influential in Europe, North America and Asia.

Abstract

The key idea of this book is that scientific and practical advances can be obtained if researchers working in multiple traditions – including traditions that have been assumed to be mutually incompatible – make a concerted and sustained effort to engage in dialogue with each other by comparing and contrasting their understandings of a given phenomenon and considering how these different understandings can either complement or mutually elaborate on each other. This key idea applies to many fields, particularly in the social and behavioral sciences, as well as education and computer science. The book shows how we have achieved this by presenting our analyses of collaborative learning during the course of a four-year project involving dozens of researchers in a series of five workshops. The 37 editors and authors involved in this project generally study collaborative learning, technology enhanced learning, and cooperative work, and share an interest in understanding group interactions, but approach this topic from a variety of disciplinary homes and theoretical and methodological traditions. The sustained dialogue across these multiple "voices" makes this book useful to researchers in many different fields and with diverse goals and agendas.
