Het uitgangspunt van dit boek is de vaststelling dat jongens en meisjes zich reeds een beeld hebben gevormd over mannelijkheid en vrouwelijkheid, nog voor ze een eerste stap binnen de school gezet hebben. Via hun opvoeding, de heersende cultuur in hun omgeving en de beeldvorming die de media verspreiden, krijgen ze reeds een heleboel opvattingen mee over sekserollen. De auteur vindt dat de pedagogie en meer specifiek de feministische pedagogie, meer aandacht zou moeten hebben voor het niet-schoolse leren van kinderen. Feministische academici brengen elk vanuit hun vakgebied (o.a. communicatiewetenschappen, sociologie, pedagogie) hun standpunt hierover naar voor.
