Abstract

In these last years the digital technology explosion has spawned so many new lifestyle models that the boundaries between "real" and "digital" are fiercely debated. This scenario has deeply changed the viewpoint about computer applications: computers become smaller, cheapest and hugely distributed in wired or unwired networks, applications become so flexible and intelligent as to tailor its communication facilities in order to increase the usability of the system. Such data-intensive, unstructured spaces featured by minimal or no centralized control flow, present a challenge for traditional methods of analysis, design and integration of advanced, distributed and intelligent computer systems. Within this challenge, an important role is played by two important research areas : Fuzzy Technology, thanks to its ability to exploit the tolerance for imprecision to achieve tractability and Agent Technology, thanks to its nature to employ agent-wise communities to carry out complex goals by means of smart interaction, cooperation, and pro-activeness. Computational Intelligence inside Agents is a novel and extremely helpful approach to support the designer of smart applications that treat unknown or ill-defined situations so to better handle knowledge representation and reasoning under these assumptions. We hope this volume represents a new step on intelligent system management roadmap.

Abstract

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Fuzzy Logic and Applications, WILF 2016, held in Naples, Italy, in December 2016. The 22 revised full papers presented together with 2 invited lectures were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on fuzzy measures and transforms; granularity and multi-logics, clustering and learning; knowledge systems; and soft computing and applications.

Abstract

This book focuses on the definition and implementation of data-driven computational tools supporting decision-making along heterogeneous intelligence scenarios. Intelligence analysis includes methodologies, activities, and tools aimed at obtaining complex information from a set of isolated data gathered from different sensors. The tools aim at increasing the level of situation awareness of decision-makers through the construction of abstract structures supporting human operators in reasoning and making decisions. This book appeals to students, professionals, and academic researchers in computational intelligence and approximate reasoning applications. It is a comprehensive textbook on the subject, supported with case studies and practical examples in Python. The readers will learn how to define decision support systems for the intelligence analysis through the application of situation awareness and granular computing for information processing. .

Abstract

This book offers an essential introduction to fuzzy logic, starting with the classical notions and going through more advanced notions from the current state-of-the-art research. Each of the major topics is accompanied by examples, problems and Scilab codes. As a free open source software, Scilab offers everyone the chance to practice the concepts learned through the book. The book represents a synthesis of authors' research and experience through the lectures delivered to university students. It is primarily intended as a textbook for upper-level undergraduates and graduates in computer science, mathematics, physics and engineering. It also represents a valuable resource for practitioners and researchers alike, bringing ideas for projects in the broad field of fuzzy logic.

Abstract

One of the most successful methodology that arose from the worldwide diffusion of Fuzzy Logic is Fuzzy Control. After the first attempts dated in the seventies, this methodology has been widely exploited for controlling many industrial components and systems. At the same time, and very independently from Fuzzy Logic or Fuzzy Control, the birth of the Web has impacted upon almost all aspects of computing discipline. Evolution of Web, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 has been making scenarios of ubiquitous computing much more feasible;  consequently information technology has been thoroughly integrated into everyday objects and activities. What happens when Fuzzy Logic meets Web technology? Interesting results might come out, as you will discover in this book. Fuzzy Mark-up Language is a son of this synergistic view, where some technological issues of Web are re-interpreted taking into account the transparent notion of Fuzzy Control, as discussed here.  The concept of a Fuzzy Control that is conceived and modeled in terms of a native web wisdom represents another step towards the last picture of Pervasive Web Intelligence.
