In 1954, following Frida Kahlo's death at the age of 47, Diego Rivera, Kahlo's husband and Mexican muralist, requested that her possessions be sealed in various cupboards and storerooms throughout the Blue House in Mexico City, where Kahlo was born, lived and died. Half a century later, in 2004, these cupboards were opened and found to contain an extraordinary collection of clothing, jewellery, cosmetics and other personal items, as well as photographs and letters. 'Frida Kahlo's Wardrobe' presents a fresh view of Kahlo's compelling life story. The book expands upon the narrative of discovery, presenting highlights from Kahlo's collection alongside her self-portraits. This pairing is unprecedented, and it will be enriched by specially commissioned photography of her belongings --

The theatrical, the satirical and the macabre come together in arresting fashion in the art of James Ensor. He was very successful in his lifetime and exerted considerable influence on the development of Expressionism. An innovator and an outsider, he rebelled against the conservative art teachings of the late 19th century academy in Brussels, drawn instead to the avant-garde salons where his radical creative vision could thrive. The imagery of masks and carnivals runs through much of his work, from vibrant colours and flamboyant costumes to an ever-present sense of drama and satire. Curated by Luc Tuymans, this exhibition will present a truly original body of work, seen through the eyes of one of today's leading painters. Tuymans will look back at Ensor's singular career through a selection of his most bizarrely brilliant and gloriously surreal creations.

Although often associated with the key figures of Belgian Symbolism, Leon Spilliaert in fact demonstrated a peculiarly individual style. Born in Ostend, he worked there for most of his career. An introvert and insomniac who suffered from poor health as a young man, Spilliaert wandered the night-time streets of the North Sea resort, creating mysterious and highly atmospheric depictions of its dark docks, beaches and promenades. Almost entirely self-taught, he drew influence from such painters as Odilon Redon and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, as well as the writers Edgar Allan Poe and Friedrich Nietzsche. This book brings together over a hundred works from international collections, including a series of haunting self-portraits that Spilliaert created in his twenties. Authoritative authors discuss the artist's singular approach and put his career in context alongside that of his more famous compatriot and contemporary James Ensor. Exhibition: Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK (23.02.-25.05.2020).
