The first English translation of Professor Locher-Scholten's 1994 Dutch text, a study of the reaction to Dutch colonial expansion by the Sumatran sultanate of Jambi. The Dutch text has been called "an excellent teaching tool for work on the Netherlands imperial project " [Locher-Scholten's] extensive archive work, in both Holland and Indonesia, her explicit reference to secondary theoretical works, and her useful lists mean that her analysis is transparent and accessible."

Deze (deels Engelstalige) bundel verschijnt naar aanleiding van de herdenking van de in 1898 in Nederland gehouden Nationale Tentoonstelling van Vrouwenarbeid. De titel 'Een vaderland voor vrouwen' verwijst naar de vraagstelling die als een rode draad door de artikelen loopt: op welke manier hebben vrouwen aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw hun houding bepaals ten opzichte van het vaderland en de politieke macht? Welke retorische strategieën en stijlmiddelen zetten zij in, en wat waren de consequenties voor de politieke machtsverhoudingen tussen de seksen? Aan de hand van vier thema's wordt het belang van de Tentoonstelling voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse vrouwenbeweging aangegeven. In het eerste deel wordt aangetoond hoe belangrijk de contacten tussen vrouwen uit verschillende landen waren bij de opzet van vrouwententoonstellingen. De artikelen in de andere drie delen behandelen thema's die op de Tentoonstelling veel aandacht kregen: sociale zorg en arbeid; de koloniale verhoudingen; middelbaar en hoger onderwijs.
