Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Dynamic service-oriented environments (SOEs) are characterised by a large number of heterogeneous service components that are expected to support the business as a whole. The present work provides a negotiation-based approach to facilitate automated and multi-level service-level management in an SOE, where each component autonomously arranges its contribution to the whole operational goals. Evaluation experiments have shown an increased responsiveness and stability of an SOE in case of changes.

Modelling and Precision Control of Systems with Hysteresis covers the piezoelectric and other smart materials that are increasingly employed as actuators in precision engineering, from scanning probe microscopes (SPMs) in life science and nano-manufacturing, to precision active optics in astronomy, including space laser communication, space imaging cameras, and the micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). As smart materials are known for having hysteretic dynamics, it is necessary to overcome issues with a broadband range of frequencies. This book offers both the mathematical tools for modeling the systems and applications, including complete case studies and source code for the experiments to help both academics and researchers in the industry to achieve precision in the control of Smart Actuator systems.

This Element synthesizes the current state of research on organizational social networks from its early foundations to contemporary debates. It highlights the characteristics that make the social network perspective distinctive in the organizational research landscape, including its emphasis on structure and outcomes. It covers the main theoretical developments and summarizes the research design questions that organizational researchers face when collecting and analyzing network data. Then, it discusses current debates ranging from agency and structure to network volatility and personality. Finally, the Element envisages future research directions on the role of brokerage for individuals and communities, network cognition, and the importance of past ties. Overall, the Element provides an innovative angle for understanding organizational social networks, engaging in empirical network research, and nurturing further theoretical development on the role of social interactions and connectedness in modern organizations.
