Abstract

"Only a comparatively few of the total number of schools and school systems have as yet taken advantage of the many possibilities which have been made available by the invention and development of dependable measuring instruments for education. It is our firm conviction that this state of affairs has come about partly, if not largely, as a result of the failure of the courses and texts in educational measurements to function adequately. This failure, we believe, may be attributed to the rather common practice on the part of instructors and authors of trying to do too much, especially with the theoretical and mathematical aspects of measurement, and the work has been projected on a level somewhat above the needs and abilities of the average student in the teacher training institutions. Our purpose in preparing this book has been to provide a text which is truly elementary and introductory, yet comprehensive and technical enough to give the beginner a real understanding of the many phases of testing and the uses of the results. To make the book generally useful to administrators as well as teachers we have included in the appendices a brief treatment of some of the more complicated statistical procedures, a concise dictionary of terms used in measurements and statistics, and a fairly complete list of publishers of tests and other devices. Since in recent years the use of tests for individual diagnosis and remedial work has become increasingly important, we have placed considerable emphasis on these particular uses of tests. We have included a discussion of the nature of the learning process as it affects remedial teaching, because too often even the best of teachers use tests and other devices mechanically without grasping the basic underlying psychological principles. It is our hope that these chapters will not only lead teachers to employ tests for these purposes, but that they will lead to better understanding of the problems involved"--Preface.
