This book includes peer-reviewed articles from the 12th International Workshop on Spoken Dialogue System Technology, IWSDS 2021, Singapore. Nowadays, dialogue systems or conversational agents have become one of the most important mechanisms for human-computer or human-robot interaction that has been widely adopted as new paradigm for many applications, companies, and final users. On the other hand, recent advances in natural language processing, understanding and generation, as well as a continuous increasing computational power and large number of resources and data, have brought important and consistent improvements to the capabilities of dialogue systems enabling users to have more productive and enjoyable interactions. However, on the threshold of a new decade, the current state of the art shows important areas where improvements are needed such as incorporation of ground-based knowledge, personality, emotions, and adaptability, as well as automatic mechanisms for objective, robust and fast evaluations, especially in the context of developing social and e-health applications. In this 12th edition of the International Workshop on Spoken Dialogue Systems (IWSDS), "Conversational AI for natural human-centric interaction" compiles and presents a synopsis on current global research efforts to push forward the state of the art in dialogue technologies, including advances to the classical problems of dialogue management, language generation and understanding, personalisation and generation, spokena and multimodal interaction, dialogue evaluation, dialogue modelling and applications, as well as topics related to chatbots and conversational agent technologies.

Biometrics is the study of methods for uniquely recognizing humans based on one or more intrinsic physical or behavioral traits. After decades of research activities, biometrics, as a recognized scientific discipline, has advanced considerably both in practical technology and theoretical discovery to meet the increasing need of biometric deployments. In this book, the editors provide both a concise and accessible introduction to the field as well as a detailed coverage on the unique research problems with their solutions in a wide spectrum of biometrics research ranging from voice, face, finge

This book presents the outcomes of the 9th International Workshop on Spoken Dialogue Systems (IWSDS), “Towards creating more human-like conversational agent technologies”. It compiles and provides a synopsis of current global research to push forward the state of the art in dialogue technologies, including advances in the context of the classical problems of language understanding, dialogue management and language generation, as well as cognitive topics related to the human nature of conversational phenomena, such as humor, empathy and social context understanding and awareness.

The papers in this volume were the fruitful scientific results of the Second International Conference on Social Robotics (ICSR), held during November 23-24, 2010 in Singapore, which was jointly organized by the Social Robotics Laboratory (SRL), Interactive Digital Media Institute (IDMI), the National University of Singapore and 2 Human Language Technology Department, the Institute for Infocomm Research (I R), A*STAR, Singapore. These papers address a range of topics in social robotics and its applications. We received paper submissions from America, Asia, and Europe. All the papers were reviewed by at least three referees from the 32-member Program Committee who were assembled from the global community of social robotics researchers. This v- ume contains the 42 papers that were selected to report on the latest developments and studies of social robotics in the areas of human--robot interaction; affective and cognitive sciences for interactive robots; design philosophies and software archit- tures for robots; learning, adaptation and evolution of robotic intelligence; and mec- tronics and intelligent control.

This book contains a selection of refereed papers presented at the Fifth Inter- tionalSymposium onChineseSpokenLanguageProcessing(ISCSLP 2006),held in Singapore during December 13-16, 2006. ISCSLP is a biennial conference for scientists, researchers, and practitionersto reportand discuss the latest progress in all scienti?c and technological aspects of Chinese spoken language processing (CSLP). The previous four conferences were held in Singapore (ISCSLP 1998), Beijing (ISCSLP 2000), Taipei (ISCSLP 2002) and Hong Kong (ISCSLP 2004), respectively. Since its inception, ISCSLP has become the world's largest and most comprehensive technical conference focused on Chinese spoken language processing and its applications. This year, a total number of 183 full paper submissions were received from 18 countries and regions, including mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, S- gapore, Japan, India, Korea, USA, Australia, Spain, Finland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Iran, Netherlands, Thailand, and Vietnam. Each paper was reviewed rigorously by at least two reviewers, thanks to the help o?ered by all membersoftheTechnicalProgramCommittee(TC),severalmembersofthe- ganizing Committee (OC), and some additional reviewers. Detailed comments from the reviewers were given to authors for their consideration in revising the ?nal manuscripts. Given the good quality of submitted papers, the TC and OC worked very hard to place as many of these good papers into the technical p- gramaspossible. As a result,74high-qualitypapers wereselectedto beincluded in this book.
