This book presents advanced molecular imaging techniques used to assess metabolic function. Covering state-of-the art modalities, it discusses the evaluation of a wide range of diseases that have a metabolic component, including cancer, inflammatory conditions, diabetes, neurodegeneration, and cardiovascular disorders. Imaging provides a quantitative perspective to the assessment of metabolic function and complements genetic analysis of disorders related to disrupted metabolism. Organized into four parts, the book highlights basic principles in molecular imaging techniques; metabolic imaging approaches, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), and hybrid modalities; metabolic diseases; and future perspectives. Featuring contributions from leading authorities in radiology, oncology, cardiology, and neurology, Imaging and Metabolism is a pioneering exploration of the role of imaging modalities in assessing the physiological status of abnormal cells and diagnosing disease.

This book is a comprehensive guide to radiopharmaceutical chemistry. The stunning clinical successes of nuclear imaging and targeted radiotherapy have resulted in rapid growth in the field of radiopharmaceutical chemistry, an essential component of nuclear medicine and radiology. However, at this point, interest in the field outpaces the academic and educational infrastructure needed to train radiopharmaceutical chemists. For example, the vast majority of texts that address radiopharmaceutical chemistry do so only peripherally, focusing instead on nuclear chemistry (i.e. nuclear reactions in reactors), heavy element radiochemistry (i.e. the decomposition of radioactive waste), or solely on the clinical applications of radiopharmaceuticals (e.g. the use of PET tracers in oncology). This text fills that gap by focusing on the chemistry of radiopharmaceuticals, with key coverage of how that knowledge translates to the development of diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals for the clinic. The text is divided into three overarching sections: First Principles, Radiochemistry, and Special Topics. The first is a general overview covering fundamental and broad issues like “The Production of Radionuclides” and “Basics of Radiochemistry”. The second section is the main focus of the book. In this section, each chapter’s author will delve much deeper into the subject matter, covering both well established and state-of-the-art techniques in radiopharmaceutical chemistry. This section will be divided according to radionuclide and will include chapters on radiolabeling methods using all of the common nuclides employed in radiopharmaceuticals, including four chapters on the ubiquitously used fluorine-18 and a “Best of the Rest” chapter to cover emerging radionuclides. Finally, the third section of the book is dedicated to special topics with important information for radiochemists, including “Bioconjugation Methods,” “Click Chemistry in Radiochemistry”, and “Radiochemical Instrumentation.” This is an ideal educational guide for nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, and radiopharmaceutical chemists, as well as residents and trainees in all of these areas.

This book covers foundational topics in the emerging field of radiopharmaceutical therapy. It is divided into three sections: fundamentals, deeper dives, and special topics. In the first section, the authors examine the field from a bird’s-eye view, covering topics including the history of radiopharmaceutical therapy, the radiobiology of radiopharmaceutical therapy, and the radiopharmaceutical chemistry of both metallic and non-metallic radionuclides. The second section provides a more in-depth look at specific radiotherapeutics. Chapters include broader discussions of the different platforms for radiopharmaceutical therapy as well as more focused case studies covering individual radiotherapeutics. The third and final section explores a number of areas for further study, including medical physics, artificial intelligence, in vivo pretargeting, theranostic imaging, and the regulatory review process for radiotherapeutics. This book is the first of its kind and is useful for a broad audience of scientists, researchers, physicians, and students across a range of fields, including biochemistry, cancer biology, nuclear medicine, radiology, and radiation oncology.

This volume provides a state of the art overview of tools for guiding surgeons in the modern operating room. The text explains how many modalities in the current armamentarium of radiologic imaging have been brought to the operating room for real time use. It also explains the current use of near infrared, fluorescent, and chemo-luminescent imaging to guide minimally invasive and open surgery to improve outcome. The book is separated into two sections. The first, discusses the biologic principles that underlie novel visualization of normal organs and pathology. The currently available equipment and equipment anticipated in the near future is covered. The second section summarizes current clinical applications of advanced imaging and visualization in the OR. Novel means of visualizing normal anatomic structures such as nerves, bile duct, and vessels that enhance safety of many operations are covered. Novel biologic imaging using radio-labeled and fluorescent-labeled molecular probes that allow identification of inflammation, vascular abnormalities, and cancer are also discussed. Authored by scientists who pioneer research in optics and radiology, tool makers who use this knowledge to make surgical equipment, and surgeons who innovate the field of surgery using these new operative tools, Imaging and Visualization in the Modern Operating Room is a valuable guide for surgeons, residents and fellows entering the field.
