Abstract

Homelessness-the state of having no home-is a growing global problem that requires local discussions and solutions. In the face of the coronavirus pandemic, it has noticeably become a collective concern. However, in recent years, the official political discourse in many countries around the world implies that poverty is a personal fault, and that if people experience homelessness, it is because they have not tried hard enough to secure shelter and livelihood.Although architecture alone cannot solve the problem of homelessness, the question arises: What and which roles can it play? Or, to be more precise, how can architecture collaborate with other disciplines in developing ways to permanently house those who do not have a home? Who's Next? Homelessness, Architecture, and Cities seeks to explore and understand a reality that involves the expertise of national, regional, and city agencies, nongovernmental organizations, health-care fields, and academic disciplines. Through scholarly essays, interviews, analyses of architectural case studies, and research on the historical and current situation in Los Angeles, Moscow, Mumbai, New York, São Paulo, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Tokyo, this book unfolds different entry points toward understanding homelessness and some of the many related problems. The book is a polyphonic attempt to break down this topic into as many parts as needed, so that the specificities and complexities of one of the most urgent crises of our time rise to the fore.

Abstract

DesignBuild is an alternative learning method in architectural education which is now being practiced around the world. Working together as a group, DesignBuild students plan and then implement their designs in real construction projetcs. The results are projects that make a social impact, often in countries of the Global South, but even more so in areas that are closer to the architecture schools. This catalogue showcases 16 international DesignBuild projects that exemplify the dedication with which students and instructors approach these projects. It deepens the debate and encourages further reflections on this practice-oriented learning method through essays, interviews, and statements. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Experience in Action! DesignBuild in Architecture, this illustrated book pays tribute to this unique educational approach - one that enables architecture students to actively adress the growing challenges of a global society.

Abstract

Today, it is hard to imagine the everyday work in an architectural practice without computers. Bits and bytes play an important role in the design and presentation of architecture. The book, which is published in the context of an exhibition of the same name of the Architekturmuseum der TUM at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich (October 14, 2020 to January 10, 2021), for the first time considers 'in depth' the development of the digital in architecture. In four chapters, it recounts this intriguing history from its beginnings in the 1950s through to today and presents the computer as a drawing machine, as a design tool, as a medium for telling stories, and as an interactive communication platform. The basic underlying question is simple: Has the computer changed architecture? And if so, by how much?

Abstract

As one of the worlds megacities, São Paulo has for decades seen an investment in architectural infrastructures that attempt to mitigate its open space shortages as well as fulfill the constant need for recreational, cultural, and sports programs. These buildings and open spaces - which can be public, semi-public, or privately-owned - arguably attempt to create inclusive places for urban society. This exhibition catalogue presents projects at different scales, focusing on their programmatic characteristics rather than the formal qualities usually emphasized in scholarship on Brazilian architecture. While many cities around the world are still chasing the so-called "Bilbao Effect" - the creation of a monofunctional "signature" architectural work by a famous architect that can attract tourism - this exhibition catalogue advocates for architectural infrastructure that adds programs of different natures, and that are aimed at social sustainability for local citizens. This aspect of urban growth in São Paulo - quite a vertical and densely-populated city; a city of great resources and also tremendous poverty; a city with high crime rates; a city with severe traffic issues; a city with public-health problems - illustrates how architecture and infrastructure can contribute to a city's urban development in multiple ways.

Abstract

The Italian-Brazilian architect and designer Lina Bo Bardi (1914-92) forged a unique path with her bold, modern designs. Spanning architecture, stage design, fashion and furniture, her work drew inspiration from the International Style, which she translated into her own visual language. Fundamental to her work was her thoughtful engagement with her adopted country of Brazil-its culture, society, politics and indigenous design traditions-and her ideas about the social possibilities of design, and she expressed her sometimes radical views in her design work, exhibitions and writings. Published on the occasion of Lina Bo Bardi's hundredth birthday, this richly illustrated volume presents an overview of her oeuvre and highlights her iconic buildings: her home, the so-called Casa de Vidro, the Museo de Arte de São Paulo and the cultural center SESC Pompéia.
