This book analyzes the family and residential trajectories of men and women across the twentieth century, which are placed in a long-term generational perspective and in the historical context where they played out. It brings together a set of studies based on data from the Biographies et Entourage (Life Event Histories and Entourage) survey conducted by the Institut National d’Etudes Démographiques (INED) on a representative sample of nearly 3,000 residents of the Paris region born between 1930 and 1950. Inside, readers will discover an insightful analysis of the family that moves away from such traditional concepts as the household or main residence and proposes new ones like the entourage and the residential system. This innovative approach to the family network describes an affective and residential proximity that takes into account the relatives and close friends who have played or continue to play a role in an individual's life. The book first presents a detailed analysis of the Biographies et Entourage survey respondents' parental universe and proposes a practical approach to the notion of parenthood that reveals the family and non-family resources available to individuals. Next, it describes the evolution of the respondents' family networks, both in and beyond the household, and details how these family circles shape their subjective judgments during childhood, adolescence, and adult life. Coverage then goes on to examine the family ties of older adults, the role of grandparents and step-families, the importance of family spaces including often frequented places, and inter-generational family solidarity. Families extend well beyond the walls of the home. Interpersonal relations are constructed throughout the life course and in all the settings where they play out. This book takes this new family reality into account and traces its dynamics across time and space. It provides essential tools for researchers looking to conduct life event history surveys and to develop innovative areas of research in the social sciences.

Individuals experience a variety of different events throughout their life-course – birth, marriage, change of employment, school graduation, etc. – which sometimes occur in rapid succession, and whose timing and definition may seem unclear. Now that survey questionnaires are able to record individual trajectories in greater depth, changes of status can no longer be viewed simply as separate events, but involve a transition process of variable duration. The observation, modelling and interpretation of these fuzzy thresholds between two situations constitute a dynamic field of research in the social sciences. The authors of this manual have pooled their experience of event-history data collection to address the questions of “focus”, i.e. finding the right observation distance to grasp the complexity of life histories, and of time, i.e. choosing the right timescale of detailed information collection. After analysing the links between quantitative and qualitative data, addressing the distinction between facts and perceptions, and deconstructing analysis data categories, they offer a number of conceptual and methodological solutions. This study extends beyond the scope of specific examples to develop a major empirical approach in a still largely unexplored area. This book targets a much broader audience than the community of demographers alone. It concerns everyone in the field of social sciences who, at one moment or another, is required to organize data collection in the field, either for research or practical purposes. The Groupe de réflexion sur l’approche biographique (GRAB) brings together researchers and academics from a range of institutions (INED, IRD, CNRS, etc.) working in a variety of disciplines: demography, geography, sociology, economics, etc. It is building on the experience acquired through 25 event-history surveys conducted to date in France, Africa and Latin America.

L’individu au cours de sa vie connaît différents événements de diverses natures (naissance, mariage, changement d’emploi, obtention d’un diplôme, etc.) qui s’enchaînent parfois très vite ou qui semblent aussi bien confus dans leur ordonnancement que dans leur statut. Du fait de la meilleure observation des parcours individuels à travers les questionnaires d’enquête, les changements d’états ne peuvent être réduits à de simples événements. Ils sont en effet marqués par une transition plus ou moins étalée dans le temps, et l’observation, la modélisation, l’interprétation de ces seuils flous entre deux situations constitue un champ de recherche foisonnant en sciences sociales. Les auteurs ont mis en commun leurs expériencesdans le domaine du recueil biographique pour s’interroger à la fois sur la question de « mise au point », c’est-à-dire trouver la bonne distance pour appréhender la complexité des histoires de vie, et sur celle du temps, c’est-à-dire selon quelle horloge recueillir le détail de l’information. Ils apportent des solutions d’un point de vue conceptuel et méthodologique, après avoir analysé les liens entre données quantitatives et qualitatives, la gestion des faits et des perceptions, ainsi que déconstruit les catégories des collectes d’analyses. Cette étude dépasse le simple cas particulier. Elle offre un bagage empirique important, peu développé jusqu’à présent.
