Abstract

For better or worse, the laws that govern the everyday operation of cities are crucial in determining their character (or our perception of such): think of the variations in laws, from city to city, in the U.S. alone, on recycling, parking, zoning or transit. (...) Alex Lehnerer's Grand Urban Rules explores the history of contemporary urban regulations, mandates and codes -from the exemplary to the bizarre- through an examination of the 115 rules that guide development in the fictional composite city of Averuni. Basing these rules on discussions of urban design and planning rules that have been implemented in Europe, North America and Asia, Lehnerer argues that they function as design tools for architects and urban planners, and emphasizes both their positive functionality and their more constrictive effects.

Abstract

Grand Urban Rules is a tribute to the city’s will to form, manifest in its vast number of steering regimes. The book contains a total of 115 significant ingredients for the Grand Projet of our contemporary metropolis. Not always positive but always powerful, these rules are the inverted, abstracted and extracted image of a city’s actual situation. Setting standards is first and foremost a cultural act. We read cities by their rules! Rules link the physical with the social city, connecting quality with quantity and latent characteristics to manifest ones. Thereby and almost unnoticed, they have become design instruments. In fact, regarding rules as tools offers a valuable (urban) design attitude – departing from an approach that wants to control everything, and moving towards a non–fatalistic form of control between freedom and coercion.

Abstract

Bilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) Whoever builds is inevitably confronted with a jungle of different positions, all with one thing in common: they are all the views of professionals. As a discipline, architecture occupies a special role. It is a profession itself, and one which relates to numerous other professions and integrates them into its practice of planning and building. GAM 19 interrogates the complex constellations and various semantic meanings of professionalism in architecture. How have the professional foundations of the discipline shifted over time due to economic, ecological, or societal changes, and how do today’s architects engage with them? What is there to be learned from all the hybrid forms in which professional procedures are circumvented by unprofessional processes in order to produce hitherto unknown results? GAM 19 takes on the task of analyzing and re-evaluating architecture’s occupational profile, providing a platform for a diverse range of players to reflect on the concept of professionalism in the context of their architectural practice and to identify its contemporary manifestations.

Abstract

Edges of the Experiment' investigates the idyllic notion of the American landscape, showing which elements contribute to the iconic landscape, and at what cost they can be maintained. It describes the thin line between nature and civilisation. How did the landscape evolve, and where are the interfaces between the organic and the artificial world, and do they fail or succeed? 'Edges of the Experiment' is a two-volume publication. Volume one shows over 60 photographs made over a period of ten years by Jongerius. Volume two is a collection of essays about the making of the American Landscape, with texts by Matthew Coolidge, William L. Fox, Hans Gremmen, Taco Hidde Bakker, Mark Pimlott, Warren Techentin, Raymond Frenken and others.
