Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between hair dyes use and risk of cancer. Therefore we have realised an extensive revue of the epidemiologic studies published from 1960 to 2005. We classified these data by cancer and by exposures (occupational versus private). Furthermore, for each categories, we have separated these data by epidemiologic types (cohort, case-control, descriptive and meta analyse) and concluded by epidemiologic critics. Most of these give results not statistically significant and present a lack of statistical power. When a risk exists, it is always very low. On the other hand, only some of these consider confusion’s factors or realise an adequate evaluation of the exposure.
In the second part of this study, we have investigated the toxicological profile of the ingredients that are actually used in the formulation of hair dyes and the changes made from 1975. We have also established a large synthesis about the metabolic data of the ingredients: absorption, skin’s and liver’s metabolism and influences of the genetic polymorphism. We’ve added a revue of the studies that have evaluated either the atmospheric exposure to chemical ingredients in hairdressers or the genotoxic effects on animals and human being after contacts with hair dyes.
Finally, we have compared these different sources and evaluated how these data could modulate our firs epidemiologic conclusions. At the end of his study, we found no evidences for a positive between the use of hair dyes and cancer
