Warfare in the Ancient Mediterranean World will disseminate recent research in volumes organized topically for easy reference while also setting the standard for such anthologies by aiming above the introductory level. The intended audience includes both scholarly specialists and non-specialists. Future volumes will not only draw upon current research, but will provide a venue for new and recent methodologies for understanding warfare in the ancient world. In this way the series will be a resource for a non-specialist audience too. Regardless of whether war is actually the “father” of any field, military history has remained popular over the centuries, both with authors and readers.

The adage that an army “marches on its stomach” finds renewed emphasis in this collection of essays. Focusing on military diet and supply from Homer through the Roman Empire, Diet and Logistics in Greek and Roman Warfare explains regional dietary options and reassesses traditional notions of “provisioning” while exploring topics ranging from strategy and subterfuge to trade and terror. Through fresh insights drawn from current research and excavation spanning the Greco-Roman world, contributors confirm how providing food and drink for soldiers was critical to every army’s success and survival. This volume stimulates reevaluation of ancient militaries and encourages new research.

Few ancient institutions capture students' interests and imaginations more than the Roman army. The conquest of territory that we still recognize, the sense of a professional military that is the forerunner of our modern armies, and the leaders all draw students, both young and old, to the army. Students often joke that ancient history should be easy because it is ancient, thinking that it does not change because it is so old. Indeed, much of what we call the drums-and-trumpets style of work is stuck in old methods and styles. But the reality is that military history, including the history of ancient warfare, is changing all the time. Just as historians in other specializations started drawing on new methods and engaging in more social history, postcolonial history, and cultural history after 1945, so did military historians. This led to the emergence of a war-and-society approach.
