Abstract

For almost a century, the aim of Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects has been to make Copenhagen a better city to live in. The studio strives for a design that transcends time and manages a constantly changeable reality. In their view, good architecture emanates from function and is drawn from inside and out. Thus, it can be equal and afford everyone a good life. Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects is behind many of the most noticed contemporary community buildings in Copenhagen, such as the Danish Radio House, Copenhagen Airport, the residential area Krøyers Plads, the New North Zealand Hospital, the department store Illum and the world's first cross-functional media house DR City. The founder of the studio, Vilhelm Theodor Lauritzen (1894-1984), was one of the most distinguished modern Danish architects. His conviction, that 'architecture is applied art for the people - never a privilege for the few', is still alive. This book covers the processes behind some of the buildings that have shaped modern Copenhagen.

Abstract

How to convert a former hospital complex in new variable type of housing and services? How to manage the local dualism of scale of a locality that is marked both by the past and modern Scandinavian societies? The architect Asko Takala, Europan 4 winner in Linköping (Sweden) has developed a concept in relation to the common open and fluctuating green space opening to the oakwooded hill. The architect proposes a modern Swedish tradition of unobtrusive row houses in close relationship with nature. The simple-volume housing zone is separated from the traffic road in the west by a line of garages and extends itself toward the park in the east. Paths cross the area for different needs, interests and feelings. In a defined context, the houses are flexible, implemented with durable materials in order to create a warm, secure feeling, a familiar and attractive environment. Landscape and building belong together.(extrait du site http://www.europan-europe.com/pages_eng/publication/realisations.php)

Abstract

”It Begins with Curiosity” focuses on 12 recent projects including Kiruna City Hall, EU Mies 2013 winner Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Center in Reykjavík, the French International School of Hong Kong, Eystur Town Hall in the Faroe Islands, the Carl H. Lindner College of Business in Cincinnati, OH, and the Siemens Headquarters in Munich.Since its founding 60 years ago, Henning Larsen Architects has worked from a simple foundational ethos: people come first. A deep curiosity for the world has guided the Danish studio to adapt their approach to Nordic modernism across countless contexts and communities, from the electric cityscapes of Hong Kong and New York to the rugged slopes of the Faroe Islands. In every projectfrom concert venues and schools, to city halls and workspaces Henning Larsen Architects pushes the envelope to encourage social interaction. Instead of looking at architecture as a stand-alone object, the studio treats it as a medium formed for and by the social and environmental systems in and around it.This book presents a selection of the office’s recent projects, such as Harpa Reykjavík Concert Hall and Conference Center, Moesgaard Museum, Eystur Town Hall, and the French International School of Hong Kong. Descriptions of the projects, alongside essays by Kent Martinussen of the Danish Architecture Center and architectural historian Hans Ibelings, offer insight into an office that operates at the vanguard of Danish design, always tuned to the needs of our changing world.

Abstract

Characterised by her aesthetic understanding and admirable detailing, workmanship and expressiveness, the works of Kristin Jarmund Architects relate to functionalism but with a reinterpretation and refinement of this idiom. Founded by Jarmund in 1985, this leading Norwegian architectural firm strives for solutions with simplicity in form and function with an emphasis on the human dimension. This monograph explores the rich history of one of Norway's finest firms, tracing back to Fyrstikkterrassen, a multipurpose commercial building in Oslo, which put Jarmund on the map as a rising star in Norwegian architecture. Since then, Kristin Jarmund Architects have designed a plethora of important and iconic buildings of varying sizes and purposes, including Nydalen Metro Station, award-winning Gulskogen School and the Norwegian Embassy in Kathmandu. In 2010, Jarmund was awarded the prestigious Honorary Fellowship of the American Institute of Architects' Award for her outstanding work in architecture and society.

Abstract

Rahel Belatchew is the founder of Belatchew Architects. Her architecture can be best understood as an innovative attitude rather than a certain style. The projects are based on careful analysis and reflect an attitude that treats each one as unique, with an individual – often sculptural – expression. There is consequently no general ‘building kit’ that the office utilises, and the results express the significant element of playfulness. The office, based in Stockholm, is also known for the experimental studio Belatchew Labs. This monograph covers several key projects of Belatchew’s architecture - such as the StrawScraper, the BuzzBuilding, Stockholm Loop, Discus, and Tensta Torn. It also includes texts by Daniel Golling, Paul Finch and Martin Rörby, as well as an interview with Rahel Belatchew by Nils Forsberg.
