Abstract

The principal question of whether and how globular clusters can contribute to a better understanding of galaxy formation and evolution is perhaps the main driving force behind the overall endeavour of studying globular cluster systems. Naturally, this splits up into many individual problems. The objective of the Joint ESO-FONDAP Workshop on Globular Clusters - Guides to Galaxies was to bring together researchers, both observational and theoretical, to present and discuss the most recent results. Topics covered in these proceedings are: internal dynamics of globular clusters and interaction with host galaxies (tidal tails, evolution of cluster masses), accretion of globular clusters, detailed descriptions of nearby cluster systems, ultracompact dwarfs, formations of massive clusters in mergers and elsewhere, the ACS Virgo survey, galaxy formation and globular clusters, dynamics and kinematics of globular cluster systems and dark matter-related problems. With its wide coverage of the topic, this book constitutes a valuable reference of the scientific knowledge of the field.

Abstract

As the regional models required to understand and control the generation, distribution and deposition of air pollutants become more precise, the need to understand the detailed effects of hilly and mountainous terrain becomes more acute. The Alpine regions and the mountainous Mediterranean coasts have large effets on the way the pollutant burden is spread in their areas. Similarly an understanding of the effects of chemical and physical processes controlling pollutant deposition and the emission of biogenic compounds is essential to the correct modelling of the coastal regions which surround so much of Europe. The results from two projects on these problems are presented in this volume: one involved a series of field campaigns in the Alps and in the Rhine valley, the other involves ships and platforms in the North Sea and also in the Mediterranean.

Abstract

James Clifford and George Marcus's (1986)Writing Culture: The Poetics and Politics of Ethnography is a highly influential book that marks a key moment in the development of reflexive, literary, and postmodern approaches to ethnographic methods. The 10 essays that comprise this widely cited collection argue that, far from a straightforward process of "writing up" data from fieldwork, ethnography involves a poetics and a politicsa set of literary techniques, idiomatic conventions, and practices of authorship that are deeply involved in the reproduction, struggle over, and transformation of relations of power and knowledge. Writing Culture generated a wide-ranging debate over the nature, purpose, and implications of ethnographic inquiry, situating itself as a key text in the "reflexive turn" in the social sciences and, specifically, in methodological questions ...
