Abstract

The "Handbook of Intercultural Training" examines] theoretical and methodological issues inherent in understanding intercultural interactions and training and the contexts in which training takes place. [This handbook analyzes] regions of the world where intercultural issues of the 20th century have heightened—including Central and South America, Europe, China, Eastern Europe, Russia, and Israel. Sexuality is also explored as a type of culture, forging a broader, contemporary definition of culture. (

Abstract

This breakthrough volume brings together cultural neuroscience and intercultural relations in an expansive presentation. Its selected topics in reasoning, memory, and other key cognitive areas bridge the neuroscience behind culture-related phenomena with the complex social processes involved in seeing the world through the perspective of others. Coverage ranges beyond the familiar paradigms of acculturation and cultural differences to propose new ideas of potential benefit to the new generation of immigrants, negotiators, executives, and other travelers. Taken together, these chapters offer a deeper understanding of issues that can only become more important as the world becomes smaller and our global family larger.  Among the topics featured:  Intergroup relationship and empathy for others' pain: a social neuroscience approach. The neuroscience of bilingualism: cross-linguistic influences and cognitive effects. Cross-cultural reading the mind in the eyes and its consequences for international relations. Implications of behavioral and neuroscience research for cross-cultural training. Intercultural relations and the perceptual brain: a cognitive neuroscience perspective. How social dynamics shape our understanding of reality. With its elegant perspectives and empirical depth, Neuroscience in Intercultural Contexts is a forward-looking reference for researchers in the cultural sciences (cross-cultural psychologists, anthropologists, etc.) and in social, affective, and cognitive neuroscience.

Abstract

Ethnic conflicts are world-wide phenomena producing discrimination, violence, and at times, unspeakable atrocities. Two thirds of international conflicts today are ethnopolitical conflicts. Some are long-entrenched disputes dating back centuries. Others are the by-products of recent trends in immigration or politics.   The Handbook of Ethnic Conflict examines the social, psychological, historical and political underpinnings of these conflicts—particularly the ethnic, cultural, religious, and national identities that feed ingroup/outgroup antagonistic perceptions and fuel cycles of aggression. It covers leading theories and models of interethnic conflict and provides in-depth analyses of twenty conflicts as diverse as those in Croatia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, France, Israel, and New Zealand.  It examines phenomena that have not received the attention they deserve, such as the obstacles presented by differing accounts of the origins and dynamics of given conflict. In each case, and in the book’s concluding chapter, contributors suggest creative responses to ethnic friction utilizing innovative intercultural approaches, conflict management approaches, and peace-building strategies.   Major features: Worldwide coverage: includes conflicts in Southeast Asia, China, the Pacific Rim, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, Western Europe, and the Balkans. Extensive analyses of the dynamics of interethnic hostility as well as of the relevant current and historical social, psychological, political and economic conditions. ·         Contributors from a variety of cultures and disciplines. Comparisons across diverse conflicts in the concluding chapter. Suggestions for diminishing prejudice and discrimination, and improving inter-ethnic relations in multi-ethnic states ·         Policy recommendations for reducing ethnic conflict.   Its unique presentation and wide range of information make the Handbook of Ethnic Conflict an effective reference for professionals, researchers, and educators working to understand, minimize, and eliminate interethnic conflict. Valuable for social psychologists, cross-cultural psychologists, political scientists, sociologists, communications scholars, and policymakers, ultimately, the Handbook is an important source for all persons who wish to contribute to a more peaceful world.  .

Abstract

"With the number of international migrants globally reaching an estimated 272 million (United Nations report, September 2019), the need for intercultural training is stronger than ever. Since its first edition, this handbook has evaluated methodologies and suggested best practice for the development of effective programs aimed at facilitating cross-cultural dialogue and boosting the economic development of countries most affected by migration. This handbook builds and expands on the previous editions by presenting the rational and scientific foundations of intercultural training and focuses on unique approaches, theories, and areas of the world. In doing so, it gives students, managers, and other professionals undertaking international assignments a theoretical foundation and practical suggestions for improving intercultural training programs"--
