Abstract

In 2015, the European Commission has started a new project that allows students that are enrolled in a Master’s programme of Translation in Belgium to work on the multilingual terminology database IATE. This European database is used daily by professional translators inside and outside the European Union, and covers all kinds of topics in all the official languages of the 28 member states of the EU. However, because of the extensiveness of the database, it has proved to be difficult to keep updating and improving all the terms in it. This is where the students come in. Each of the students that have enrolled in the project has chosen a specific subject area. In the present master’s thesis, we work on the terminology of waste. We endeavour to represent some of the most important terms in the subject area of waste terminology, which are included in a database that follows the structure that is used in IATE. We do this both in English and in Dutch. In doing so, we try to answer two questions. Firstly, we try to find out which is the best method for term extraction. This question is answered mainly in the methodology section, where we present the different ways in which technical terms can be identified and selected. For the identification of the terms in our database, we work with corpora of two kinds of texts in both languages: policy texts, which here can be equalled to legislative texts, and specialist texts. Policy texts were found in European sources, that is on the EUR-Lex website that collects all the legislative texts of the European Union. Additionally, for Dutch we have also included texts from the government of Belgium and the Netherlands. Specialist texts, on the other hand, were found on the internet, and were extracted from sources that are involved with waste professionally, such as recycling companies. Again, we have collected texts from both Belgian and Dutch sources. As regards the English specialist texts, we concentrate our research solely on texts from the United Kingdom and Ireland. Our second research question can be split up into three parts. First of all, we want to know which English terms should be included in a database on the waste terminology used in the European Union, and what are its Dutch equivalents. Additionally, we investigate whether that European terminology is also used outside the EU. And finally, we try to find other waste terminology that is not used in European texts. These questions are answered by the database that has been produced as part of the project, by the concept system in which the relations between the terms are made explicit, and by the corpus material we have collected. The first two parts of the question are answered systematically, whereas the last part is answered in a more arbitrary manner.

Abstract

The present paper will be focusing on the study of three specific phenomena of the Spanish language in the original manuscript of El Cantar de Mio Cid, an epic poem that has been formed between the twelfth and the fourteenth century. The phenomena under consideration are leísmo, the prepositional direct object and reduplication, all of which still exist in contemporary Spanish. These are innovative phenomena of morphosyntactic variation, which means they are used in alternation with their variant that was inherited from Latin. On the one hand, reduplication and, to a lesser extent, the prepositional direct object, are phenomena that are largely established in the language, and are even obligatory in some contexts. Leísmo, on the other hand, is a more controversial and stigmatised phenomenon. To obtain a more profound view of the manuscript and the three phenomena we will be studying, we will start by explaining the importance of El Cantar de Mio Cid for Spanish historiography and linguistics. Furthermore, we will take a closer look at Ramón Menéndez Pidal, the first linguist to have made a scientific analysis of the poem, as well as three other studies that have been conducted more recently and which focus exclusively on the three phenomena, i.e. Flores Cervantes (2002), Chantal Melis (1995) and Timo Riiho (1988). After this, we will analyse all the instances of leísmo, the prepositional direct object and reduplication in the manuscript, and investigate the contexts in which they appear. In the analysis, the most important factors will be the general distribution of each phenomenon in the text, its degree of animacy, and its linguistic gender and number. On the basis of these data, we will be able to compare the contexts of these early appearances of the phenomena with the contexts in which they occur nowadays. Moreover, we will look at the influence of some of the factors that have been introduced in previous studies, as well as investigate Melis' decision of...

Abstract

Over hun levens is vaak weinig bekend.
