Aulus Gellius' accounts of his studies in Athens are a major source for the personality of Taurus the Platonic philosopher of the 2nd century A.D. and besides, give important insights into the history of Platonic school of that time. The present work puts together Gellius' reports on the Middle Platonist for the first time and — by its detailed commentary — offers a new understanding of contents, form and methods of his philosophical instructions, of the relationship between teacher and students, and of student life in the 2nd century A.D. in general. By this means numerous topics in ancient philosophy, philology, science, and pedagogics are dealt with. Finally the results thus gained are combined with all remaining literary and epigraphic evidence, so that a lively portrait of Taurus as a philosophical teacher emerges. A collection of testimonies and fragments concerning Taurus' life and work, a comprehensive bibliography, and indices complete the work.

This volume is the second part of a collection of core works by Matthias Baltes. The main part contains more recent essays on ancient philosophy, in particular on Plato and Platonism, as well as on Epicurus, some of which are published here for the very first time. A smaller section contains earlier works on Homeric poetry. Both collections offer an almost complete overview of the research work carried out by Matthias Baltes, above all of the area that he has focused on intensively during the course of his life: the history of thought phenomena and Platonism. In addition to discussing individual philological questions, he also turns his attention to the wide-ranging philosophical and theological aspects of this world of ideas, important both in ancient and modern times.

In Platonici minores Marie-Luise Lakmann offers a collection of all philosophers considered to be “Middle Platonists” (1st century BC to AD 2nd century). The collection includes 85 “minor” Platonists, arranged in alphabetical order, little known figures seldom discussed in modern research. For each philosopher all known facts about life and teaching are presented with a bibliography. This is followed by a collection of fragments and testimonia relating to the Platonist. Each original text is accompanied by a German translation. An appendix includes a brief presentation of all “major” Platonists of this period. The volume provides a complete conspectus of an important period in the history of philosophy, bringing together many scattered materials and throwing new light on what is already known of the Middle Platonism.

The Editio Critica Maior documents the textual history of the Greek New Testament within the first millennium on the basis of the most important Greek manuscripts, ancient translations, and New Testament quotations in ancient Christian literature. After the volumes on the Acts of the Apostles and the Catholic Epistles have been available for several years, the first volume on a synoptic Gospel, the Gospel of Mark, now follows. For this purpose, the original biblical text has been reconstructed with the help of a newly developed methodology, which has led to several changes. The volume is published in three parts. The first part offers the text including the apparatus. The second part offers supplementary materials and overviews. The third volume provides a commentary on selected variants and a series of additional essays on individual aspects. This complete volume includes all three parts.

The essays compiled in this volume individually address the varied forms in which the revival of Platonism manifested itself in ancient philosophy. It pays special attention to the issues of unity and beauty, the mind and knowledge, the soul and the body, virtue and happiness, and additionally considers the political and religious dimensions of Platonic thought. Starting from Plato and Aristotle, the studies examine the multiple transformational forms of Platonism, including the Neo-Platonists – Plotinus, Porphyrios, Iamblichus, Themistius, Proclus, and Marinus – along with Christian thinkers such as St. Augustine, Boethius, and Dionysus the Areopagite. The authors who have contributed to this volume make multiple references to the scholarly work of Dominic J. O’Meara. Their further refinement of O’Meara’s approach particularly casts a new light on Late-Platonic ethics. The essays in this collection also contribute to scholarly research about the multiple inter-relationships among the Platonists themselves and between Platonists and philosophers from other schools. Taken as a whole, this book reveals the full breadth of potential in the revival and transformation of ancient Platonism.
