Connaît-on encore aujourd'hui Mencius (372-289 av. J.-C.), laissé dans l'ombre de la vénération qui entoure Confucius ? Le grand public francophone à la différence de l'anglophone, a quelque excuse à l'ignorer puisque la plus récente et peu accessible traduction française du livre de Mencius date de plus d'un siècle. Elle se conformait, comme il se doit, à l'interprétation, alors orthodoxe, de Zhu Xi (1131-1200). Si excellente soit-elle, n'est-ce pas une double raison d'avoir l'audace d'en offrir une nouvelle à un public plus large ? Il y en a d'autres. Tout bien pesé, Mencius peut être considéré comme le Platon du Socrate chinois que fut Confucius aux yeux des défenseurs de la déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme. Mencius en est l'une des sources lointaines, ce qui n'est pas rien. S'il s'adresse aux princes, c'est en pensant aux gens du commun. Il le dit en formules sans ambiguïté : "Le peuple est le plus précieux; viennent après les autels de la patrie; le souverain passe en dernier. C'est pourquoi le Fils du Ciel tient sa position du petit peuple, les grands vassaux, la leur du Fils du Ciel, et les grands officiers tiennent la leur des grands vassaux
