Il y a quarante ans, on retrouvait les livres d'une secte gnostique à Nag Hammadi, en Égypte. Les Pères de l'Église, du IIe au IVe s., combattirent ces interprétations ésotériques des évangiles, très en vogue. Certains textes, comme l'Évangile selon Thomas, sont des témoins précieux de la transmission des paroles de Jésus en dehors des quatre évangiles canoniques.Deux spécialistes présentent et traduisent de larges extraits de tous ces livres gnostiques, en soulignant leur rapport avec les textes bibliques : ce sont J.D. Dubois et R. Kuntzmann.
