Ostensibly a collection of writing that sets out Kengo Kuma’s theories of architecture, but also an antivolume, antimegastructure, and in some sense anticapitalist, left-field critique of where the architecture world finds itself today. Point Line Plane is architectural theory, but written as narrative, full of intriguing vignettes, such as the fact that in Ancient Rome windows were fitted with slices of marble because glass was so expensive. It’s written in a very Japanese form: a series of mini essays that circle around a theme and is aimed at a highly literate audience. Seventy-two related essays across four sections set out Kuma’s rejection of the architecture of volume and mass that categorized the twentieth century in favor of a more ad hoc architecture that can be easily disassembled and, by drawing on tried and tested practices of the past, touch the earth more lightly.

Kengo Kuma (born 1954) and Erieta Attali (born 1966) complement one another perfectly in terms of their artistic statement: both of them focus on the inclusion of the landscape. It is not the architecture as such that plays the primary role but the way it communicates with the outside, the surrounding world. Details from nature and the intricate connection of interior with exterior space characterize the photographs by the first-class photographer Erieta Attali. In his unique works, Kengo Kuma combines Japanese traditions in architecture with those of modern architecture. His architecture constitutes a bridge where the individual and nature meet. Kuma became famous in the West for his sensitive extension to a mid-century icon in New Canaan, Connecticut, which this exquisite monograph insightfully discusses and portrays.

The quintessential Japanese architect of today, Kengo Kuma has forged a modern design language that artfully combines the countrys traditional building crafts with sophisticated technologies and materials. Associating a deep understanding and respect for native construction techniques with a more globalized outlook than many of his compatriots, Kengo Kumas work represents a significant generational shift in a country rich with contemporary architecture. From his iconic Glass House (1995) to the Nezu Museum in Tokyo, this is the complete record of Kengo Kumas built work, comprising twentyfour projects to date. Architecture historian Kenneth Frampton frames Kumas work in the context of post-war Japans flourishing architecture scene and influential figures and offers a perspective on the international acclaim of Kumas ideas and buildings. Projects are organized by the material themes that have come to define the architects output: Water and Foliage; Wood; Bamboo and Grass; and Stone and Ceramics. Kuma develops a personal and architectural reflection on each. Each building is presented through descriptive text, newly commissioned photographs and detailed drawings, this last revealing a privileged view of the refined architectonic vocabulary that characterizes Kumas buildings. With the close collaboration of Kuma, this major monograph fully documents a leading light of the global architecture scene, offering a rich insight into contemporary interpretations of Japans ancient building traditions. This beautifully produced book will be an inspiration to any designer who aims to create spaces for history and the future.

This volume complements the travelling exhibition on Kuma's projects which opens in Syracuse (Sicily) in May. Kuma's creative process and his painstaking work on the material in order to transform it into a building is documented through the presentation of the most important of his architectural works designed between 1994 and 2004. Luigi Alini's essay describes the artist's formative years, analyzing the various aspects of his research through themes and compositional mechanisms that have remained constant, his study and profound knowledge of materials, and the symbiosis between architecture and nature. A selection of Kuma's writings completes the volume.(extrati de www.electaweb.it)

Combining the modern technology of reinforced concrete, steel and glass with native stone masonry, Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece remains a breathtaking and innovative piece of architecture that achieves a rare balance of quiet and repose. A particular aspect that once led the architect to suggest that 'you listen to Fallingwater the way you listen to the quiet of the country.' Here, the residence is stunningly documented through both interior and exterior, full-page colour and black and white photographs, that are accompanied by original plans and sketches from the hand of the architect. The monograph is introduced by an essay by Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, exploring the history and creation of the house.
