Abstract

Advances in Discrete Tomography and Its Applications is a unified presentation of new methods, algorithms, and select applications that are the foundations of multidimensional image reconstruction by discrete tomographic methods. The self-contained chapters, written by leading mathematicians, engineers, and computer scientists, present cutting-edge research and results in the field. Three main areas are covered: foundations, algorithms, and practical applications. Following an introduction that reports the recent literature of the field, the book explores various mathematical and computational problems of discrete tomography including new applications. Topics and Features: * introduction to discrete point X-rays * uniqueness and additivity in discrete tomography * network flow algorithms for discrete tomography * convex programming and variational methods * applications to electron microscopy, materials science, nondestructive testing, and diagnostic medicine Professionals, researchers, practitioners, and students in mathematics, computer imaging, biomedical imaging, computer science, and image processing will find the book to be a useful guide and reference to state-of-the-art research, methods, and applications. .

Abstract

The visualization, construction, and reconstruction of multidimensional images are of intense interest in science and engineering today, and discrete tomography—which deals with the special case in which the object to be reconstructed has a small number of possible values—offers some significant new analytical and computational tools. Discrete Tomography: Foundations, Algorithms, and Applications provides a critical survey of new methods, algorithms, and select applications that are the foundations of multidimensional image construction and reconstruction. The survey chapters, written by leading international authorities, are self-contained adn present the latest research and results in the field. The book covers three main areas: important theoretical results, available algorithms to utilize for reconstruction, and key applications where new results are indicative of greater utility. Following a thorough historical overview of the field, the book provides a journey through the various mathematical and computational problems of discrete tomography. This is followed by a section on numerous algorithmic techniques that can be used to achieve real reconstructions from image projections. Topics and Features: * historical overview and summary chapter * uniqueness and complexity in discrete tomography * probabilistic modeling of discrete images * binary tomography using Gibb priors * discrete tomography on the 3-D torus and crystals * binary steering * 3-D tomographic reconstruction from sparse radiographic data * symbolic projections The book is an essential resource for the latest developments and tools in discrete tomography. Professionals, researchers, and practitioners in mathematics, computer imaging, scientific visualization, computer engineering, and multidimensional image processing will find the book an authoritative guide and reference to current research, methods, and applications. .

Abstract

DGCI 2006, the 13th in a series of international conferences on Discrete Ge- etry for Computer Imagery, was held in Szeged, Hungary, October 25-27, 2006. DGCI 2006 attracted a large number of research contributions from academic and research institutions in this ?eld. In fact, 99 papers were submitted from all around the world. After review, 55 contributions were accepted from which 28 were selected for oral and 27 for poster presentation. All accepted cont- butions were scheduled in single-track sessions. The program was enriched by three invited lectures, presented by internationally well-known speakers: Jean- Marc Chassery (Domaine Universitaire Grenoble, France), T. Yung Kong (City University of New York, USA), and L´ aszl´oLovasz ´ (E¨ otv¨ os Lor´ and University, Budapest, Hungary). We were pleased that DGCI got the sponsorship of the International Asso- ation of Pattern Recognition (IAPR). DGCI 2006 is also a conference associated with the IAPR Technical Committee on Discrete Geometry (TC18). Hereby, we wouldliketothank allcontributors,theinvitedspeakers,allreviewersandm- bers ofthe Steering andProgramCommittees, andallsupporting personnelwho made the conference happen. We are also grateful to the Institute of Inform- ics, University of Szeged, for the ?nancial and infrastructural help, which was essential to the organization of a successful conference. Finally, we thank all the participantsand hope that they found interest in the scienti?c programand also that they had a pleasant stay in Szeged.

Abstract

. It was symbolic to bring IPMI, in the year of the 30th anniversary of its foundation, to this place, and organize the meeting with the close cooperation of local and traditional western organizers. It also provided a good opportunity to summarize briefly a history of IPMI for those who were new to the IPMI conference. This year we received 82 full paper submissions from all over the world. Of these, 24 were accepted as oral presentations. These were divided into 6 sessions. In spite of our efforts, it was found to be impossible to make these sessions fully balanced and homogeneous.
