Abstract

Forest Microbiology, Volume Two: Forest Tree Health highlights a range of emerging microbial phytopathogens of forest trees, along with novel approaches for managing tree pests and diseases in a changing climate. The book provides an overview of selected microbial pathogens of forest trees, with an emphasis on their biology, lifecycle, spreading mechanisms, impact on affected tree species and current and prospective control strategies. At the same time, the impact of tree microbiomes on host fitness is discussed. Beneficial components of tree microbiota are presented, along with their functional role in tree nutrition, immunity and disease resistance. In addition, this volume addresses the many functions of microbial disease agents of trees including fungi, bacteria, viruses and phytoplasma. Strong emphasis is placed on the genetics, biochemistry, physiology, evolutionary biology and population dynamics of the microorganisms involved.

Abstract

"Tree pathogens and pests, and the associated diseases that they cause, belong to factors that weaken the health of forests and lead to significant ecological, economic, and social consequences. In addition, climate change and invasive pathogens constitute one of the greatest threats to the health of world's forests. Due to climate change, invasive pathogens pose even a greater threat than previously imagined. This is partly because the warming of climate will allow the expansion of the geographical range of invasive pathogens. This third volume of the Forest Microbiology series titled Tree Diseases and Pests provides an overview of the complex disease agents of trees including viruses, phytoplasma, bacteria, fungi, and nematodes as well as major insect pests of trees, including bark beetles, emerald ash borer, coffee borers, leaf-cutting ants, cocoa mirids, etc. A strong emphasis is placed on the genetics, biochemistry, physiology, evolutionary biology, and population dynamics of the organisms involved. Anatomical, chemical, and molecular basis of the resistance biology of forest trees are covered. This book will fill a major knowledge gap as well as prove valuable for foresters, arborists, forest pathologists, tree biologists, students of biology and forest sciences, other practitioners in specific areas of forestry, and everyone interested in forest tree diseases and pests." --
