The Armenians' mass immigration to Transylvania in the second half of the 17th century introduced their church administration as well, and their union with Rome led to the emergence of the Armenian-rite branch of Catholicism. The more than 300-year-old separate Transylvanian Armenian Catholic rite within the Archdiocese of Alba Iulia has necessitated the establishment of an individual archive. The archive that was created in Armenopolis in 2010 incorporates the full archival stock of the church institutions of the Catholic Armenians in Transylvania: the administrative documentation of the four Armenian Catholic parishes (Gheorgheni, Elisabethopolis, Armenopolis, and Frumoasa), the 20th-century archive of the Armenian Apostolic Governorate, and the archival fragments of two archdeaconry districts.

In Transylvania, in the erstwhile free royal city of Elisabethopolis, a library can be found in the local Armenian Church, containing some 2000 old prints. The library is, in effect, a legacy that incorporates the books formerly belonging to the city's Armenian ministers and local intelligentsia. Due to its corpus of books in Armenian language, the Armenian library of Elisabethopolis is not only a uniquely characteristic treasure of the Carpathian Basin but also a gem of Armenian culture worldwide.Namely, the significance of the library goes way beyond its valuable early print stock – it belongs among the few book collections that can provide a substantial basis for the partial reconstruction of the culture of the Armenians in 17th-to-19th-century Europe. Although a number of historic Armenian libraries are known outside Armenia, the catalogue of the Armenian library of Elisabethopolis is the first containing data about the Armenian settlements in Europe.

The phrase, “In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth...” (Genesis 1:1) starts the Holy Scripture, which in Armenian is “Astwacashunch”, or ”God’s breath”. Armenia is considered the first nation to have adopted Christianity as the state religion in the beginning of the 4th century. The Armenian Scripture, which Mesrop Mashtots ans his disciples translated in the mid-5th century, is anointed the “Queen of Bible Translations” by European researchers. Hence, we can understand the special tradition of books in Armenia, which culminated in 1666 in Amsterdam, where the first printed Armenian-language Bible was published. This volume is the catalogue of the exhibition organized at the National Széchényi Library, Budapest in 2019, supplemented by a collection of papers on the same topic. Besides the analysis and evaluation of the Armenian Bible from the perspective of printing, cultural history and theology, it presents the richness of Armenian apostolic, protestant and catholic religious practice which characterizes the Armenian life in the Ottoman Empire and the Armenian Catholic communities of the Carpathian Basin. The biblical manuscripts and the first Armenian printed bibles that are displayed in this volume are enriched by objects of religious tradition that reflect the cultural, linguistic and religious diversity of the Armenian society.
