This volume presents a selection of in-depth studies and state-of-the-art surveys of several challenging topics that are at the forefront of modern applied mathematics, mathematical modeling, and computational science. These three areas represent the foundation upon which the methodology of mathematical modeling and computational experiment is built as a tool in all areas of applications of mathematics. The articles cover both fundamental and applied research, and provide the reader with state-of-the-art achievements in the development and application of new theories at the interfaces of applied mathematics, modeling, and computational science. The book can serve as a reference on several important current topics in modern applied mathematics and modeling, including random matrix theory with its innovative applications, and dynamic blocking problems. Other important areas covered include: energy stable weighted essentially non-oscillatory schemes with applications in fluid dynamics and aerospace sciences; elliptic curves over finite fields and their applications in cryptography; multiple scale methods coupling network and continuum models and their applications in various areas involving porous media; new and efficient finite difference schemes for hyperbolic equations; statistical geometric and topological techniques and their applications in the life sciences; optimal control applications combining discrete and continuous features. The material presented in this book aims at fostering interdisciplinary collaborations required to meet the modern challenges of applied mathematics, modeling and computational science. At the same time, the contributions combine rigorous mathematical and computational procedures and examples from a variety of applications ranging from engineering to life sciences, and provide a rich source for graduate student projects.

This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings on Learning and Intelligent Optimization, LION 14, held in Athens, Greece, in May 2020. The 37 full papers presented together with one invited paper have been carefully reviewed and selected from 75 submissions. LION deals with designing and engineering ways of "learning" about the performance of different techniques, and ways of using past experience about the algorithm behavior to improve performance in the future. Intelligent learning schemes for mining the knowledge obtained online or offline can improve the algorithm design process and simplify the applications of high-performance optimization methods. Combinations of different algorithms can further improve the robustness and performance of the individual components. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, LION 14 was not held as a physical meeting. .

The Handbook of Computational Neurodegeneration provides a comprehensive overview of the field and thus bridges the gap between standard textbooks of research on neurodegeneration and dispersed publications for specialists that have a narrowed focus on computational methods to study this complicated process. The handbook reviews the central issues and methodological approaches related to the field for which the reader pursues a thorough overview. It also conveys more advanced knowledge, thus serving both as an introductory text and as a starting point for an in-depth study of a specific area, as well as a quick reference source for the expert by reflecting the state of the art and future prospects. The book includes topics that are usually missing in standard textbooks and that are only marginally represented in the specific literature. The broad scope of this handbook is reflected by five major parts that facilitate an integration of computational concepts, methods and applications in the study of neurodegeneration. Each part is intended to stand on its own, giving an overview of the topic and the most important problems and approaches, which are supported by examples, practical applications, and proposed methodologies. The basic concepts and knowledge, standard procedures and methods are presented, as well as recent advances and new perspectives.

The Second Waterloo Workshop on Computer Algebra (WWCA 2008) was held May 5-7, 2008 at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Canada. This conference was dedicated to the 70th birthday of Georgy Egorychev (Krasnoyarsk, Russia), who is well known and highly regarded as the author of the influential, milestone book "Integral Representation and the Computation of Combinatorial Sums," which described a regular approach to combinatorial summation, today also known as the method of coefficients. Another great success of this Russian mathematician came in 1980, when he solved the van der Waerden conjecture on the determination of the minimum of the permanent of a doubly stochastic matrix and was awarded the D. R. Fulkerson Prize. This book presents a collection of selected formally refereed papers submitted after the workshop. The topics discussed in this book are closely related to Georgy Egorychev’s influential works.

This volume, as Andrew M. Odlzyko writes in the foreword, “commemorates and celebrates the life and achievements of an extraordinary person.” Originally conceived as an 80th birthday tribute to Herbert Wilf, the well-known combinatorialist, the book has evolved beyond the proceeds of the W80 tribute. Professor Wilf was an award-winning teacher, who was supportive of women mathematicians, and who had an unusually high proportion of women among his PhD candidates. He was Editor-in-chief of the American Mathematical Monthly and a founder of both the Journal of Algorithms and of the Electronic Journal of Combinatorics. But he was first a researcher, driven by his desire to know and explain the inner workings of the mathematical world. The book collects high-quality, refereed research contributions by some of Professor Wilf’s colleagues, students, and collaborators. Many of the papers presented here were featured in the Third Waterloo Workshop on Computer Algebra (WWCA 2011, W80), held May 26-29, 2011 at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Canada. Others were included because of their relationship to his important work in combinatorics. All are presented as a tribute to Herb Wilf’s contributions to mathematics and mathematical life.
