This book takes a global approach to violencebetween husbands and wives in faith contexts. It focuses primarily on Christians, and usesanthropological, theological and historical methods which intersectwith and are challenged by lay and ordained women and men fromeighteen countries. Drawing on ethnographic research over severaldecades from around the world, Elizabeth Koepping presentstestimonies from abused women, as well as theological justificationfor spousal abuse from the perpetrators. She argues that violenceagainst the (female) spouse can be understood as proper behaviourby manly men towards unruly wives, rather than an insult to the Imageof God in all persons.
