Het verhaal van de aarde en de organismen die erop leven is grootser en spectaculairder dan een Hollywoodfilm en heeft meer plotwendingen dan de spannendste thriller. 
Uit rotsachtig puin dat rond een bescheiden jonge ster cirkelde, klonterde ruim vier miljard jaar geleden een kleine planeet samen die de eerste jaren op de rand van de vernietiging stond. De jonge aarde werd bekogeld door kometen en meteoren, het oppervlak was bedekt met kolkende magmaoceanen en giftige gassen verstikten de atmosfeer.
