This volume offers new perspectives on the appeal and profound cultural meaning of socialism over the past two centuries. It brings together scholarship from various disciplines addressing diverse national contexts, including Britain, China, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and the USA. Taken together, the contributions highlight the aesthetic, narrative, and religious dimensions of socialism as it has developed through three broad phases in the modern era: early nineteenth-century beginnings, mass-based political organizations, and the attainment of state power in the twentieth century and beyond. Socialism did not attract millions of people primarily because of logical argument and empirical evidence, important though those were. Rather, it told the most compelling story about the past, present, and future. Refocusing attention on socialism's imaginative dimensions, this volume aims to revive scholarly interest in one of the modern world¹s most important political orientations.

Das Handbuch Religionskunde in Deutschland analysiert nicht-konfessionellen religionsbezogenen Unterricht in der Schule aus religionswissenschaftlicher Sicht. Die für diesen Unterricht essentielle säkulare religionskundliche Perspektive wird einleitend mit ihren inhaltlichen und strukturellen Konsequenzen beschrieben und von religiösen und interreligiösen Perspektiven abgegrenzt. Darauf aufbauend wird die Lage der Religionskunde in Deutschland in systematisch-vergleichenden, historischen und bundeslandspezifischen Kapiteln mit Blick auf die sich wandelnden Kontexte und Dynamiken von staatlichem Neutralitätsanspruch, Religionsfreiheit, Gesetzgebung und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen analysiert. Hierbei wird konsequent die religiös unabhängige religionskundliche Perspektive ("learning about religion") im Kontext der jeweiligen bildungspolitischen Diskurse fokussiert. Die Analyse von Religionskunde in ausführlichen Kapiteln über alle 16 Bundesländer zeigt, dass Religionskunde im deutschen Schulsystem weitgehend eine Leerstelle darstellt, obwohl die Relevanz des Themas bildungspolitisch durchgehend betont wird. Hier zeigt das Handbuch Handlungsbedarf bezüglich der Implementierung und religionswissenschaftlichen Fundierung von Religionskunde. The Handbook of Religious Education analyzes non-confessional, religion-related teaching in schools from the perspective of religious studies. It provides an introductory description of the religious education perspective essential to this kind of teaching. Building on this, the handbook is divided into historical and systematic-comparative chapters, as well as extensive chapters on the state of religious education in all sixteen German states.
