1 : First comprehensive presentation of one of the highlights of the Dutch architectural scene. Architecture of the past twenty years has had to respond to contradictory requirements: on the one hand, it had to be scaled back in order to provide neutral structures open for a variety of uses. On the other, it had to present inimitable, eye-catching objects with a unique design and high recall value. Pursuant to the idea of specific neutrality and strategic key terms such as low cost monuments or Ikea classicism, Atelier Kempe Thill has continually come up with new solutions.Fulfilling the contemporary demand for versatile, neutral design while still retaining a recognizable identity in their work, the German architecture firm Atelier Kempe Thill has since 2000 created buildings that recall the legacy of European architecture in a powerful, natural and innovative way. 2 : Flexible Use – Timeless Buildings. The architectural firm Atelier Kempe Thill is renowned for designs that are neutral and economical, as well as enjoyable and innovative. To achieve this, André Kempe and Oliver Thill and their team do not shy away from boundless discussions with their clients and an unconventional use of materials. “Specific Neutrality” is what they have called their balance between unique designs and an architecture that is as flexible as possible, ever since publishing their design manifesto on collective housing in 2004. In today’s world, where the economic situation can rapidly change, along with the demand for spaces and their use, this approach is more relevant than ever. In their second monograph, the two architects present twenty-three projects from the last twelve years, complemented by thematic essays written by Kempe and Thill and by well-known experts in the field of architecture.
