In the past decades, the discussion about theoretical approaches to the topic of 'landscape' has increased. This book presents the currently discussed theoretical approaches to landscape and shows its potentials and limits. The theoretical approaches are discussed on the basis of current questions, such as socialisation and the hybridisation of landscape, and combined with empirical results. This is followed by a discussion of the landscape policy operationalisation of theoretical considerations and empirical findings. Contents • Currently Discussed Theoretical Perspectives On Landscape • Aesthetic Approaches to Landscape • The Differentiated Socialization of Landscape • Power and Landscape: From Political Worldviews and Critical Landscape Research • Current Issues in Social Science Landscape Research: Theoretical Classifications Audience Geographers, sociologists, landscape architects, landscape planners, regional planners, ethnologists, archeologists Author Dr. Dr. Olaf Kühne studied geography, modern history, economics and geology at Saarland University and received his doctorate degrees in geography and sociology from Saarland University and Hagen University. Habilitation from Mainz University. After working in various Saarland state authorities and at Saarland University, he was Professor of Rural Development/Regional Management at Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences and Associate Professor of Geography at Saarland University in Saarbrücken between 2013 and 2016. Since October 2016, he has been a professor of urban and regional development at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen.

This book examines the power definiteness of landscape from a social constructivist perspective with a particular focus on the importance of aesthetic concepts of landscape in development. It seeks to answer the question of how societal notions of landscape emerge, how they are individually updated and how these ideas affect the use and design of physical space. It also analyzes how physical manifestations of societal activity impact on understandings of individual and societal landscapes and addresses the essential aspect of the social construction of landscape, cultural specificity, which in turn is discussed in the context of the expansion of a western landscape concept. The book offers an unprecedented, comprehensive and detailed examination of societal power relations in the context of landscape development. The numerous case studies from the physical manifestation of modern spatial planning in the United States, the power discourses concerning the design of model railway landscapes, and the medial production of stereotypical landscape notions shed light on the complex and multilayered interactions of collective and individual landscape references. It is a valuable resource for geographers, sociologists, landscape architects, landscape planners and philosophers.

The first book in the series provides the concept of a theoretical redefinition of 'horizontal geographies'. These denote the spatial syntheses as undertaken in various disciplines, whether as regional studies, area studies, new regional geography, and many more. The basis of the redescription is philosophical neopragmatism, which has occasionally been taken up in the spatial sciences, but has never been differentiated into a theory-driven empirical research program. This development of the research program guides the present book. Philosophical neopragmatism, especially as conceptualized by Richard Rorty, focuses in particular on contingency of society, self, and language, which also allows spatial syntheses to be understood not as 'images of reality' but as contingent proposals for redescribing spaces. As a result of the complexity of spatial processes, their horizontal geographic study requires a triangulation of theories, methods, researcher perspectives, data, and the involvement of people without expert special knowledge. To highlight the contingency of the spatial syntheses, the presentation of the results - —here especially graphic and cartographic - —resorts to the attitude of irony. Regarding the six levels of trigangulation, neopragmatism acts as a meta-theoretical orientation framework. Against the background of the complexity of spatial developments on the one hand and to operationalize Rorty's principle of private self-creation and public solidarity on the other hand, Ralf Dahrendorf's concept of life chances is drawn upon. Especially in the differentiation of this concept made in this book, it serves on the one hand for an understanding access of the (also spatial) expression of options and ligatures,, and on the other hand it offers a normative framework for the evaluation of socio-spatial developments. The reference to neopragmatic studies on spatial syntheses conducted to date and evaluated in this book shows the potential of the approach elaborated here in conceptual detail for the first time. .
