The Italian design company Kartell has represented the "culture of plastics" for over 60 years. It was founded in 1949 by Giulio Castelli, a chemical engineer with a passion for the new material, and a vision to combine technical innovation with cutting-edge design. Kartell designers like Gino Colombini, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Joe Colombo, and Anna Castelli Ferrieri created objects that would change the domestic landscape forever. With the plastic-loving era of Pop and the international breakthrough of Italian design in the 1960s, Kartell became a household name. In 1988 Castelli's son-in-law Claudio Luti took the helm, reenergizing the company in collaboration with Lissoni. Together they formed a creative team that struck a perfect balance between design experience and technological experimentation. Under Luti's direction instant design icons were produced, like the La Marie and Louis Ghost chairs made from transparent polycarbonate by Philippe Starck, Ron Arad's flexible shelf system Bookworm, or Ferruccio Lavian's Bourgie lamp. Along the way, Kartell has redifined plastics, and changed it from an industrial substance into a distinct material with emotional impanct and a distinct aesthetic.
