This is the first book to explore the relationship between tourism and spices. It examines the various layers of connection between spices and tourism in terms of destinations, attractions and cuisines. The book reveals how spice-producing destinations are employing spices in destination branding and encouraging spice farms to move towards tourism, while destinations not producing spices are employing spices and herbs in distinctive local cuisines. Both tangible and intangible spice heritages are highlighted as tools for developing destinations, creating attractions, inventing new forms of livelihoods and distinguishing local, regional and national cuisines. This volume will be useful for researchers and students in cultural tourism, culinary tourism, anthropology of food and food history.

Souvenirs are part of global and local travel and tourism in all corners of the world. This book portrays souvenirs as expressions of culture and as triggers of cultural change. The volume provides critique and theorisation of souvenirs of places, people and experiences in the context of lives lived at the margins of society, politics, tourism flows and urbanisation. "The Routledge Handbook of Tea Tourism provides comprehensive and cutting-edge insights into global tea tourism. With contributions from leading scholars and experts across 19 countries, it demonstrates the interdisciplinary nature and breadth of topics associated with global tea tourism. Tea is deeply connected to tourism through both travel and consumption. For host communities it provides an opportunity for diversification from the production and or serving of tea, while sharing cultural traditions and improving livelihoods. The Handbook is organised into five parts, with an Introduction and Epilogue, and the first part begins with an overview of historical and contemporary perspectives on the foundations of tea tourism. It digs into the roots of such tourism in China; the relationship of wild tea to indigenous tourism in Vietnam; heritage railways to tea tourism; and tea tourism in Africa. The second part examines sustainable tea tourism, with examples from Thailand, Turkey, Sri Lanka and India. The third Part explores the management and marketing of tea tourism, highlighting tools and techniques for development and the impact of social media on the tea tourism experience. It draws on examples of tea tourism experience in diverse settings, such as the English tea room; a pearl milk tourism factory in Taiwan; and a hot spring tea destination in Japan. Fourth part provides perspectives on innovation and practice in tea tourism, such as gastronomical tea tourism in Turkey, Japan and Thailand; tea cafés and community diversification in Japan; the role of GIAHS designation in tea tourism; and tea tour guiding in Iran. Finally, the fifth part provides insights on resilience in tea tourism, examining topics such as human-wildlife conflicts and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sector in both Asia and Europe. This Handbook provide a valuable resource for students and researchers, presenting a rich collection of theoretical and empirical insights, an agenda for future directions in the field, and end of chapter discussion questions. It also serves as a useful tool for key stakeholders, aiming to increase interaction between academia and industry, encouraging the development of sustainable responsible tea tourism that benefits local communities on a global basis"--

"This collection of eleven essays examines nineteenth-century legal and extralegal attempts to restrict freedom of speech and the press as well as the efforts of others to push back against those restrictions"-- "Most Americans today view freedom of speech as a bedrock of all other liberties, a defining feature of American citizenship. During the nineteenth century, the popular concept of American freedom of speech was still being formed. In An Indispensable Liberty: The Fight for Freedom of Expression in the Nineteenth Century, contributors examine attempts to restrict freedom of speech and the press during and after the Civil War. The nine essays that make up this collection show how, despite judicial, political, and public proclamations of support for freedom of expression, factors like tradition, gender stereotypes, religion, and fear of social unrest often led to narrow judicial and political protection for freedom of expression by people whose views upset the status quo. These views, expressed by abolitionists, suffragists, and labor leaders, challenged rigid cultural mores of the day, and many political and cultural leaders feared that extending freedom of expression to agitators would undermine society. The Civil War intensified questions about the duties and privileges of citizenship. After the war, key conflicts over freedom of expression were triggered by Reconstruction, suffrage, the Comstock Act, and questions about libel. The volume's contributors blend social, cultural, and intellectual history to untangle the complicated strands of nineteenth-century legal thought. By chronicling the development of modern-day notions of free speech, this timely collection offers both a valuable exploration of the First Amendment in nineteenth-century America and a useful perspective on challenges to today's civil liberties. Sugar as a global commodity has shaped our world, impacting cultures and influencing cuisine. The heritage of sugar is investigated in the context of globalization and tourism development. Facets of the sugar story include colonization, enslavement, decolonization and postcolonial tourism while cultural practices traced to sugar include carnival and confectionery as souvenirs. However, what happens where sugar is still produced, where production is in decline, or where the country has exited from producing? How is sugar engrained in national identities and how does this influence tourism? From the perspectives of contributing authors, destination examples include Brazil, India, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, Barbados, Cuba, Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, and St. Kitts. This is the first work examining sugar heritage in relation to tourism from a global perspective, identifying related tourism directions.
