Abstract

"Based on a 1.7-million-word corpus of 160 research articles from both soft and hard knowledge fields, this book sets out to explore how a particular type of noun, namely, metadiscursive nouns are rhetorically used to mediate writer-reader interaction in disciplinary writing. Analysts of academic discourse have come to regard hedges, reporting verbs, directives and so on as forming part of a wide repertoire of interactive features available to authors, suggesting a variety of terms, including evaluation, stance, appraisal and metadiscourse. One aspect which has been less fully explored, however, is the rhetorical role nouns play in achieving writers' persuasive goals. This book fills the gap by proposing a particular type of nouns as metadiscursive nouns (as in 'this supports our hypotheses that youth are more likely to co-offend when neighborhoods are less disadvantaged'). The author aims to find out how writers employ metadiscursive nouns to engage and interact with readers in academic prose, raising theoretical and pedagogical implications and how they can be applied in the teaching of academic writing. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars working in the areas of English for Academic Purposes, Corpus studies, Academic writing, and Linguistics in general"--

Abstract

This book provides expert coverage of the current state of the art in the application of nanotechnologies to cellulose research. It offers a comprehensive collection of topics including nanocellulose isolation, assembly into hierarchical structures, and advanced emerging applications. During the past decades, research in nanocellulose has advanced quickly, driven by the urgent needs for sustainability and the availability of advanced nanotechniques. Although cellulose has been investigated and used for thousands of years, the recent advances in nanotechnology have transformed our view of this natural substance. Cellulose, when present in the highly crystalline nanoscale form, can demonstrate interesting mechanical, optical, and fluidic properties that can be manipulated in designing materials with novel applications. This book contains 12 chapters. Chapter 1 focuses primarily on the fundamentals of nanocellulose, including general aspects on its structure, isolation, and characterization. Chapters 2-4 summarize the recent progress on assembly of nanocellulose into the macroscopic scale using state-of-the-art techniques. Chapters 5-13 cover the most advanced applications of nanocellulose in emerging areas, including superstrong materials, light management, electronics, energy storage, printed battery, water treatment, nanogenerator, and biomedicine. The book will appeal to upper undergraduate and graduate students through practicing researchers as a comprehensive reference on the subject of nanocellulose and its use in various fields.

Abstract

Engineering mechanics provides the theories and methods of describing and predicting the state of equilibrium or accelerated motion of particles or rigid bodies under the action of forces. It consists of three parts: statics (chapters 1–5), kinematics (chapters 6 and 7) and kinetics (chapters 8–10) and it is basically corresponding to the course of “theoretical mechanics” in China. It is hoped that this book will help to develop in engineering students the correct understanding of the principles of mechanics and the ability to analyze and solve engineering problems using the principles. This book can be used as a teaching material for civil engineering, hydraulic engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace, transportation and other engineering majors in colleges and universities, and as a self-study book for relevant technical personnel.
