The Abbreviatio in gestis sanctorum is one of the most important collections of legends in the history of hagiographic literature and one of the primary texts for an understanding of European culture in the 13th century. The author has collected the major hagiographic traditions in a concise and effective form, laying the groundwork which will make possible the composition of the Legenda aurea by Jacopo da Varazze, the masterpiece of the literary genre of condensed legendaries, which is, to a large degree, based on the Abbreviatio. We find collected together for the first time certain legends - for example, St Christopher, St. Julian the Hospitaler, and, in a part of the manuscript tradition, St. George - that will be of major importance and become part of the canon in Western Europe. This volume is the first print edition of the Abbreviatio. The critical text includes an analysis of the composition of the legendary and its relation to the other minor works by Jean de Mailly; in particular, the Chronica Universalis Metensis.
