Abstract

The conception of nature as heritage or patrimony depends not only on the preservation of species and spaces, but also on economic, political and community-identity strategies. Going beyond the diversity of the objects and actors involved, this work explores the relationships between claims based on notions of patrimony, identity and territory. Different approaches – historical, geographical, legal and anthropological – reveal the components at work in land and property conflicts, and address the issue of the status of local knowledge in Africa and in Madagascar. This work proposes new directions for thinking and action to advance biodiversity conservation and joint resource management. It is intended for an audience of managers and decision-makers, as well as for scientists.
