Abstract

"Finally, the unnerving, seemingly inexplicable phenomenon that is the political rise of Donald Trump explained--just in time to save democracy and the world. When Aaron James first published his groundbreaking and bestselling book Assholes : A Theory, in 2012, little did he or we know that he had written one of the prophetic books of our time. Donald Trump was featured prominently in that book as an exemplary asshole, of course; in this urgent new broadside, Aaron James applies the tenets of asshole theory rigorously and directly to the man as Trump continues his relentless drive to become the Republican presidential candidate. Never has an account of the asshole as a major problem for the rest of us been more called for. Never have the techniques of what James calls 'asshole management' been so desperately needed. I'm not joking. A book of potentially world historical importance. At the very least an instant bestseller"--

Abstract

""Without question, this text will be the most authoritative source of information on statistics in the human services. From my point of view, it is a definitive work that combines a rigorous pedagogy with a down to earth (commonsense) exploration of the complex and difficult issues in data analysis (statistics) and interpretation. I welcome its publication."". -Praise for the First Edition. Written by a social worker for social work students, this is a nuts and bolts guide to statistics that presents complex calculations and concepts in clear, easy-to-understand language.

Abstract

This book re-reads the relationship between the Victorian sensation novel and modernity. Whereas critics have long recognized its appearance in the form of nervous subjects and technologically-enabled mobility, Green contends that sensation fiction also depicts modernity in the form of intellectual and moral discontinuity. Through closely historicist readings of novels by Wilkie Collins and Mary Elizabeth Braddon, as well as by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and Rhoda Broughton, this book traces how discontinuity is manifested in the suspenseful plotting of these fictions, through which readers are challenged to revise conventional assumptions about the world and adopt more contingent perspectives. The study demonstrates that reading for this sense of modernity does not merely uncover the genre's engagements with various mid-century contexts. More fundamentally, it broaches a new sense of the function and significance of sensation fiction: the acclimatization of its readers to the discontinuities of modern existence.

Abstract

"This groundbreaking work on public finance shows us how we can rebuild our economy and restore the American promise of prosperity for all... When the government decides to spend money, it simply creates the necessary funds--as if out of thin air. That's how we pay for interstate highways, post offices, wars, social services, and economic stimulus packages. So, if it's that easy to make money... can't we all get more of it? Absolutely. And we should. At least, so argue financial regulation expert Robert Hockett and bestselling philosopher Aaron James in this eye-opening, irreverent, and inspiring exploration of what the dollar really is. Better still, they show how we can build an economy that works for everybody without unwanted taxes and added regulations. In the process, we learn how disingenuous the political rhetoric surrounding inflation can be, how the demonized concept of the deficit is really just another way of tallying our collective national wealth, and how a strong central bank could free us from the abuses of private banking. With broad historical background and ambitious yet practical institutional proposals, Hockett and James offer a new vision of public finance--people's banking for a people's economy. Armed with this new outlook, we can even stop worrying debt and learn to love a strong, accountable, and transparent Federal Reserve as a cornerstone of our democracy"--Dust jacket flap.
