Abstract

Which design principles and construction methods have established themselves in architecture in the last 25 years? What social trends have influenced architecture ? Which technical innovations had an impact and what has become of their approaches ? Which architects stepped into the limelight at this time and how have they developed ? Christian Schittich has explored these and many other questions. He tells the individual history of outstanding buildings in chronological order, with an eye to the overall context of architectural development of recent years. Looking at selected photographs and drawings documenting the construction process and/or the current state of the building: wherein lies the significance of a building's design, how has it contributed to society, what technical innovations did it involve and what effect did they have ? Or did the construction method prove itself at all? An exciting discourse about three decades of architectural history.

Abstract

Cities are engines of social change and diversity, whose density is increasing in many places. What housing models and architectural concepts do we need to secrure the quality of life in urban centres in the long term ? This book documents 26 current urban huosing projects, including neighbourhood and multistorey apartment buildings, cooperative complexes and social housing, or townhouses. The individual projects are presented from the organisation of the floor plan to the constructional detail. How open or seperated are they towards the urban environment ? Xhich materails and types of construction are suitable for which functions ? A complementaty section of the book shows how extensions, conversions, and refurbishments also contribute to meeting economic and ecological housing requirements in the city.

Abstract

Thinking and working in a variety of scales lies at the heart of architecture. What scale should be selected for which design decision? At what point is it sensible to change the scale? What can and ought to be depicted in a true-to-scale architectural drawing? And how can such a drawing remain clear and thus appealing? An architectural drawing is not least a means of communication. It contains pieces of information which are relevant for various recipients. The choice of the appropriate scale determines whether the client or the construction worker understand what is being conveyed. In view of the countless possibilities offered by CAD, the objective of clearly and unambiguously conveying one s own ideas is occasionally lost sight of. The authors, Ansgar Schulz and Benedikt Schulz, provide orientation with their book, exemplarily guiding the architectural drawing back to its original purpose: the creation of exceptional structures.

Abstract

Accessible architecture is about much more than wide doorways and low-placed light switches. Accessibility means independent and self-reliant living and mobility for people of all ages and in any situation in life. Enabling this requires a clear awareness of the related concepts and principles that need to be adopted into the planning at an early stage. This manual presents both public buildings and orientation systems in the fields of culture, transport, and education, as well as examples from the worlds of work and health. Informative essays provide an insight into the theory of signage, while selected projects are described from the perspective of Design for All.

Abstract

Affordable housing is currently in short supply in many European cities. Persuasive models and outlooks for the future are needed if demand is to be met. Yet how can costs be reduced without restricting the quality of housing? 0This book documents current outstanding housing developments from all over Europe, which are distinguished by their quality but also by the fact that they were realised with reduced construction costs. Design solutions, deliberate material selection, specific building processes and explicit planning requirements all contributed to this result. The projects are documented in depth with photos, texts, floor plans and detailed drawings. The introduction includes three essays that examine the topic from different perspectives.
